Under the overall organization and coordination of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Radio and Television announced the official launch of the world's first 5G cross network roaming trial commercial trial at the opening ceremony of the 2023 World Telecommunications and Information Society Day conference held in Hefei today (17th). 5G cross network roaming refers to the ability of users to access other operators' 5G networks and continue using 5G services when their respective operators do not have 5G network coverage. The "14th Five Year Plan for the Development of the Information and Communication Industry" issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2021 proposes to deepen the construction and sharing of telecommunications infrastructure, support the construction and sharing of 5G access networks, promote 5G roaming across different networks, and gradually form a mobile communication network pattern with multiple networks coexisting in hot areas and one network supporting remote areas. At present, laboratory testing, field verification, and current network pilot have been completed to verify the ability and commercial feasibility of 5G cross network roaming services. The world's first trial commercial trial of 5G cross network roaming is scheduled to be launched in Xinjiang on May 17, 2023. In areas where 5G cross network roaming services are provided, users can use terminals that support 5G cross network roaming functionality without changing their cards or numbers, and can directly use 5G cross network roaming services without paying additional fees. 5G cross network roaming can effectively reduce duplicate investment, accelerate 5G network coverage, and improve the overall efficiency and customer service perception of 5G networks.
