The Hami manuscript "Meeting Records of Maitreya" is the only complete Uyghur script document at home and abroad, and is the "treasure of the museum" in Hami City, Xinjiang. What secrets are hidden in the Hami manuscript "Meeting with Maitreya"? What historical value does it reflect? In this regard, Yan Feng, the director of the Hami Museum in Xinjiang, recently received an interview with China News Agency's "East West Question". The summary of the interview transcript is as follows: China News Agency reporter: As one of the "treasures of the town museum" in Hami City, Xinjiang, how was the Hami transcript "Meeting with Maitreya" discovered? Yan Feng: In April 1959, Yaya Reyimu, a herdsman in Banfanggou, Tianshan Commune, Hami, Xinjiang (now Banfanggou Township, Tianshan District, Hami), discovered a package of objects wrapped in felt in a hollow hole of a large pine tree while grazing and resting. Upon opening it, it turned out to be a broken package of pages, which were handed over to the Xinjiang Museum after careful consideration. According to expert appraisal, it was written over 1000 years ago and is a valuable large-scale Buddhist script in Uyghur script, "Maitreya Meets". Meeting of Hami Ben Maitreya. What is the script of the Hami manuscript "Meeting with Maitreya"? What story is told in the play? Who is the author of this book? Yan Feng: The original script of the Hami manuscript "Meeting with Maitreya" is Sanskrit and belongs to the stage work of the Theravada Buddhism sect. It is based on the story of Maitreya, the savior of the world, who cultivates and becomes Buddha, and rescues all living beings in the Buddhist scriptures. With Maitreya's life story as the main thread, it forms a primitive drama of religious reasoning, from "birth", "becoming a monk", "becoming Buddha", "meeting the Buddha" to "saving living beings" and other storylines. In the 20th century, in addition to the Hami region in Xinjiang, fragments of the transcripts of the "Meeting of Maitreya" were also discovered in Turpan region, Yanqi County, and other places. Among them, the fragments of the Uyghur script discovered in Hami and the fragments of the Tuhula script discovered in Turpan were selected for the first batch of the "National List of Precious Ancient Books". From the locations, characters, and singing melodies marked at the beginning of each chapter in Yan Qi's manuscript, it can be seen that the original script is undoubtedly a script. However, the Hami manuscript "Meeting with Maitreya" does not indicate the melody or the characters present, only the location. However, it can be seen that the characters present in each chapter have very distinct personalities and are full of strong script colors. The Hami manuscript "Meeting with Maitreya" currently has 25 chapters, although it lacks 26 and 27 chapters. However, it adds a preface written by the donor Qu Tashigan, and is currently the only complete Uyghur script document at home and abroad. According to expert research, around the 9th to 10th century AD, with the widespread dissemination of Buddhism, the "Meeting of Maitreya" was transmitted from Yanqi and Turpan to Hami. The donor and preface author who presided over the transcription of the "Meeting with Maitreya" in Hami were named Qu Tashiyigan, who claimed to be "Dutong" in the text and was likely the commander of the Gaochang Uyghur forces stationed in Hami. According to the text, Qu Tashigan has a prominent family background and is a devout Buddhist. He copied the "Meeting of Maitreya" with the aim of meeting Maitreya Buddha in the future. In addition, he specially ordered someone to build a statue of Maitreya Buddha. Research shows that there are three different types of handwriting in this manuscript fragment, and at least three different individuals have transcribed it into the book.
