According to preliminary statistics from the National Film Administration on the 4th, the box office of the May Day holiday (April 29th to May 3rd) in 2023 was 1.519 billion yuan, with 37.63 million viewers. Domestic films accounted for 86.52% of the box office. During the May Day period, the top five films in the box office were "Life's Road Not Familiar" (513 million yuan), "King of the Sky" (466 million yuan), "So Many Years" (173 million yuan), "Slam Dunk Master" (148 million yuan), and "Prosecutors' Storm" (47.41 million yuan). This year, the number of new films in the May Day season reached 18, setting a new high for the same period in previous years. Multiple new films have been released in a concentrated manner, covering diverse genres such as revolutionary history, action, comedy, love, disaster, and animation. This not only meets the diverse viewing needs of holiday audiences, but also showcases the booming development of the Chinese film market. The satisfaction survey of Chinese film audiences conducted by the China Film Art Research Center in the May Day period of 2023 (hereinafter referred to as the "satisfaction survey") showed that the satisfaction score of Chinese film audiences in the May Day period was 83.3 points, which is the highest satisfaction value for the spring and May Day periods in recent years. The 7 films surveyed in the satisfaction survey covered various types such as military, comedy, love, disaster, and suspense, fully covering the segmented viewing needs of scheduled audiences. The overall creative quality also received a "satisfactory" evaluation from the audience, with individual film satisfaction exceeding 80 points. Among them, "King of the Sky", "Life's Road Not Familiar", "Rescue from the Sky", and "Night Life in Changsha" have a satisfaction score of over 82 points. "King of the Sky" and "Life's Road Not Familiar" have entered the top ten of the 79 spring and May Day survey films in history. According to the comprehensive satisfaction survey results, this year's "May Day" high-quality films are abundant and the supply is relatively balanced, which is conducive to activating the market potential and further promoting the comprehensive recovery of the film market. However, during the May Day holiday, the popularity of travel is high, and there are numerous and fiercely competitive films in the schedule. How to optimize the promotion pace, highlights, and impact, compete for limited attention resources from audiences in a short period of time, and effectively spread the reputation of high-quality films is worth considering for practitioners.
