Revitalizing the vitality and charm of traditional villages in the times

2023-05-04

Recently, the 2023 demonstration list of centralized and contiguous protection and utilization of traditional villages was announced, with 35 counties (cities, districts, banners) including Miyun District in Beijing, Yongding District in Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, and Langzhong City in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province among them. According to statistics, currently, 8155 traditional villages have been included in the national protection list, protecting 539000 historical buildings and traditional dwellings, and excavating 4789 intangible cultural heritage items at or above the provincial level. Traditional villages are the "gene bank" of Chinese agricultural civilization and the "treasure trove" of Chinese traditional culture. Traditional villages preserve precious historical information and cultural landscapes, with great cultural value and inheritance significance. On the one hand, every traditional village with rich forms and unique features is a vivid cultural heritage, vividly and diversely interpreting local civilization, freely showcasing their unique material, social, and spiritual cultural traditions, with great historical, cultural, scientific research, and artistic aesthetic value; On the other hand, traditional villages are still the place where "one party" lives and resides. In the current accelerating urbanization process, protecting "one party's soil and water" is also aimed at protecting the spiritual home that people always remember, bringing regulation and comfort to the current social emotions. It is gratifying to note that in recent years, various measures have been implemented in various regions to provide a "hometown" for homesickness, actively protecting "one land, one people". Historic galleries, cultural streets, immersion blocks... In Hubei, many traditional villages are transformed with the concept of "building new as before", creating leisure tourist attraction, demonstrating local lifestyles, and preserving and carrying forward the cultural traditions and fresh charm of the villages that have been passed down from generation to generation. Yongzi, Wutong Walking Silver, Colored Pottery... In Banqiao Ancient Town, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province, intangible cultural heritage and cultural and creative businesses have settled in one after another. Villagers, as the "promoters" of local traditional culture, welcome tourists from all directions with smiles. The fireworks in traditional villages make people linger, and the living standards of villagers continue to improve with the deep integration of "intangible cultural heritage+tourism". Traditional villages connect history and modernity, as well as local customs and human relationships. Many practices vividly demonstrate that such a rich and colorful cultural landscape with modern charm still requires more unique "opening methods" to assist in its inheritance and promotion. At the same time, it should also be noted that the protection of traditional villages still faces some objective challenges and difficulties. From a practical perspective, in some places, intangible cultural heritage projects are created into performance programs, but traditional content and characteristic props are ignored, and modern elements are improperly added, which many villagers cannot understand and their participation is naturally low; Some traditional villages have outdated infrastructure and inadequate protective development, which still require professional and unified design and transformation to improve the quality of life for villagers and enhance the tourism experience for tourists; There are also places where the understanding of the connotation and value of traditional villages is not deep, and the application for traditional villages is not actively enough. Some ancient buildings that have not been included in the protection list are not properly protected. The overall principle of traditional village protection and utilization is "protection first, utilization based, and inheritance based". On the one hand, it is necessary to excavate and utilize the inherent resource endowment of traditional villages, and fully stimulate their strong internal driving force for inheritance and development; At the same time, it is also necessary to actively promote the integration of "rural ancient charm" and "modern atmosphere", so as to revitalize and showcase the cultural heritage of more traditional villages.
