Where will long-distance passenger buses go with the high-speed rail network of airplanes?

2023-04-19

In recent years, with the diversification and convenience of transportation methods such as high-speed rail, airplanes, and ride hailing, the market space of long-distance bus passenger transportation industry has been squeezed, and some bus passenger stations have been closed, making it difficult for passenger transportation enterprises to operate. The reporter's research found that the rich choice of travel methods is an important reason for the continuous decline of the long-distance bus passenger transportation industry. At the same time, some passenger transport enterprises have rigid business operations, coupled with relatively poor comfort and experience of long-distance bus passenger transportation, which has also caused serious customer loss. Due to the relatively low price of long-distance bus passenger transportation and its still playing a certain role in connecting three-dimensional transportation and building diversified transportation capacity, some industry insiders suggest supporting the transformation and diversified development of relevant enterprises. In practice, some passenger transport enterprises continue to explore new business models, such as the operation of "customized passenger cars", "multi-purpose passenger stations", and multi-station intermodal transportation, which to some extent alleviates the operational pressure of passenger transport enterprises. Recently, reporters boarded a bus from Jinyang Bus Station in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province to Changshun County, Guizhou Province. Surprisingly, this 45 seater bus only had 2 passengers, including journalists, departing from Jinyang Bus Station. Afterwards, the bus successively changed trains and picked up passengers from Guiyang North Station, Huaguoyuan, Huaxi and other places, and ultimately only had 5 passengers. This journey of about 100 kilometers, calculated at a fare of 38 yuan per person, resulted in a revenue of only 190 yuan for the passenger transport company. I thought there would be a rebound in passenger transportation this year, but currently it's still not optimistic. "The head of a passenger transportation enterprise in Guizhou looked helpless when it came to the situation of long-distance bus passenger transportation. The person in charge introduced that during the 2022 Spring Festival transportation period, the company's operating revenue was still over 17 million yuan, while this year's Spring Festival transportation only had over 14 million yuan. Since 2015, the company's operating revenue has been declining at a rate of about 20% per year, "said Yuan Dong, the general manager of Guizhou Bailian Transportation (Group) Co., Ltd. During peak hours, the company had over 700 passenger cars, but now there are only over 350 left, and the operating routes have also significantly decreased. Yuan Dong introduced that around 2015, the average occupancy rate of vehicles was about 80%, and now it is less than 50%. The company's revenue has declined, and many drivers have switched to buses, ride hailing services, and some even go out to work, "he said. According to a reporter's research, some private passenger transport companies, due to financial strength and other reasons, mostly have privately owned vehicles and hire drivers to drive them. Many drivers earn a considerable amount of income based on the number of trips, but sometimes they can only schedule one or two days per shift, "a car owner told reporters. In previous years, as long as a family owned a bus, whether it was operated by themselves or contracted to others, the income was relatively considerable. Now this situation has become a history. Public information shows that in recent years, there have been mergers and closures of bus passenger stations in many parts of China, resulting in continuous losses for related passenger transport enterprises. The long-distance bus passenger transportation industry continues to shrink, and some employees have switched careers. Various factors have squeezed the market space of long-distance bus passenger transportation, and Lin Jing, the head of the Transportation Department of the Bijie Transportation Bureau in Guizhou Province, stated that the significant decline in the long-distance bus passenger transportation industry is due to various reasons. The diversification of travel modes is the fundamental reason for the continuous decline of the passenger transportation industry
