The Hot Network Literature Calls for Literary Criticism

2023-04-18

Recently, the Research Report on the Development of Chinese Online Literature in 2022 released by the Institute of Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences shows that last year, there were 492 million users of Chinese online literature, and the size of the online literature market reached 38.93 billion yuan. The report shows that Chinese online literature has entered a period of vigorous development. Chinese online literature started in the 1990s and has become an important type of Chinese literature after 20 to 30 years of development. After entering the new century, online literature has experienced unprecedented prosperity, mainly manifested in the following aspects: firstly, a large number of excellent works of online literature have emerged, including many themes such as reality, history, youth, fantasy, science fiction, etc., providing literary insights and ideological inspiration for the development of the new era society. Secondly, the creative techniques of online literature continue to mature, and writers are determined to innovate and strive to tell Chinese stories well. With the increase of the group of online writers and the enrichment of creative experience, writers are unwilling to follow the existing themes and narrative techniques, constantly updating their narrative methods, perspectives, and strategies. They intentionally go against the beaten track to narrate, showcase new types of creation, integrate different types and media to unfold stories, and derive new writing trends and diverse styles. The third is the explosion of online literature IP, where a large number of works have been adapted into film and television dramas, meeting the aesthetic needs of different audiences. At the same time, many online literary works have been adapted into anime, games, audiobooks, and other popular works continue to emerge. Fourthly, online literature provides a large number of employment opportunities for society, promoting the continuous refinement of social division of labor and socio-economic development. Some literary websites either focus on high-quality products to accelerate IP conversion efficiency, or stand out in certain literary genres to promote genre literature creation, or accelerate the pace of paid reading to improve the economic benefits of operators and writers. The rapid development of online literature has revitalized literature in people's lives and socio-economic development. Correspondingly to the flourishing development of online literature, there have been remarkable achievements in online literary criticism. Since the beginning of the new century, with the rapid development of online literature, some scholars have keenly noticed this emerging literary genre and have continued to pay attention and research on it. In the academic community, Ouyang Youquan, Xia Lie, Shan Xiaoxi, and others have long been engaged in online literary criticism and have published a series of research works, contributing to the rise of online literary criticism. However, compared to the large amount of online literary criticism gained after the release of online literary works, offline academic literary criticism is still unfamiliar with online literature. Not only are there fewer researchers engaged in online literary criticism, but there are also some discrepancies between the academic community's understanding and evaluation of online literature and the actual situation. Literary criticism originates from literary creation practice, and the hot online literature calls for the intervention of critics. For critics engaged in tracking criticism, the rise of online literature as a new literary force should not be ignored. Instead, online literature should be objectively evaluated based on reading and understanding, correcting the single and stereotyped impression of online literature formed in the academic community in the past. Critics should strive to familiarize themselves with the new discourse of online literary criticism, establish new standards for evaluating online literature, adapt to the new requirements of literary criticism in the online era, and conduct systematic and in-depth research on this vibrant literary genre. There is an era of literature in one era
