Don't let excessive packaging disturb the aroma of tea

2023-04-10

In recent years, with the concept of low-carbon environmental protection deeply ingrained in people's hearts, tea packaging has gradually become "simplified" and lightweight. At the same time, we should also see that the phenomenon of over packaging still exists to a certain extent. Decades of grams of tea are packed into various bottles, plus foam, partitions, and paper boxes. The packaging is several times or even more than ten times heavier than tea, which also increases unnecessary costs... Before and after the Qingming Festival, the market ushered in a wave of new tea on the market peak, and the problem of over packaging again aroused social concern. The pursuit of complex and exquisite, flashy packaging is not only based on the profit calculation of tea companies' "better packaging, higher premium", but also on the practical considerations of catering to market demand. A beautifully packaged tea gift box is often regarded by consumers as a great gift item. Because of this, some tea gift boxes have exquisite packaging, with three layers inside and three layers outside appearing particularly exquisite. Many high-end gift teas are made with painted wooden and bamboo boxes on the outside, and porcelain bottles, pottery jars, and handmade tin jars on the inside. The cost of packaging boxes alone can reach hundreds of yuan. Even more exaggerated is that some luxury packaged tea gift boxes have a packaging volume of 3 to 5 times the actual required volume, often costing more than the tea itself. Moderate packaging of tea is beneficial for brand building and product sales, but excessive packaging can bring multiple negative impacts. The package of buying casks and returning pearls runs counter to the implication of frugality in tea culture, and is incompatible with the new development concept of green and low-carbon. Many tea gift boxes are difficult to reuse, and various fillers are useless. In the end, they can only be thrown away as household waste, causing resource waste and environmental pollution. In addition, the marketing philosophy of valuing "appearance" over "quality" is not conducive to the healthy development of the tea market. It should also be noted that behind luxury tea gift boxes, there are often hidden "four customs" issues such as illegal collection and delivery of tea gifts, recycling of tea gifts to cash out, and illegal procurement of public funds, making the tea that was originally characterized by "clear air" begin to become "foul smelling". Opposing excessive packaging and advocating green production and consumption, there are both mandatory standards and industry initiatives, as well as promoting frugality. Previously, the General Office of the State Council issued a notice on further strengthening the governance of excessive packaging of goods, requiring the strengthening of the full chain governance of excessive packaging of goods. The latest revision of the State Administration for Market Regulation's "Restriction on Excessive Packaging of Goods - Requirements for Food and Cosmetics" will be implemented from September 2023. This mandatory national standard covers 31 categories of food and 16 categories of cosmetics, including tea, alcohol, etc. The new standard makes clear provisions on the number of packaging layers, packaging costs, etc. In addition, the China Consumers Association, in conjunction with relevant organizations, recently launched the initiative of "advocating appropriate tea packaging and promoting green and civilized consumption", proposing that tea operators should abide by the provisions of relevant laws and national standards on commodity packaging, especially for tea leaf commodities with accessories, accessories, etc., strict packaging standards, and do not play a "scratch ball". Both mandatory standards and industry initiatives aim to promote the return of tea packaging to simplicity and green. The rectification of excessive packaging that neglects the basics and neglects the ends requires comprehensive measures and joint efforts. Tea companies should consciously become pioneers, practitioners, and advocates in resisting excessive food packaging, focus more on the quality and taste of tea, introduce more recyclable and environmentally friendly materials into tea packaging, and promote simplicity
