China's first high-energy synchrotron radiation source successfully accelerates the first electron beam

The project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Institute of High Energy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences undertook the construction. The construction has been started since June 2019, with a construction period of 6.5 years. After completion, HEPS will be one of the fourth generation synchrotron radiation light sources with the highest brightness in the world and the first high-energy synchrotron radiation light source in China. Li Jingyi, deputy director of the accelerator department of the HEPS project, introduced that the HEPS linear accelerator is a normal temperature linear accelerator with a length of about 49 meters, which is used to generate electrons and accelerate them to 500 MeV. It is the source of electrons and the first stage accelerator, consisting of the electron gun at the end, the beam focusing unit, the acceleration structure, the microwave power source and other equipment. The energy of the first electron beam reaches 500 MeV, and the terminal charge of the linear accelerator reaches more than 2.5 nm. Pan Weimin, the general director of the HEPS project, said: "The linear accelerator has successfully delivered the beam at full energy, which marks the beginning of the beam adjustment of the HEPS accelerator. On this basis, the beam adjustment team will carry out parameter optimization and performance improvement to optimize the performance indicators of the linear accelerator, and lay a solid foundation for the construction of the subsequent intensifier and storage ring." HEPS has fully entered the stage of scientific research equipment installation. Li Jingyi said, "HEPS will complement the existing light sources in China to form energy zones, which is of great significance to improve China's national development strategy and the original innovation ability in the frontier basic science and high-tech fields."
