The launching ceremony of the China-Aided Cambodia Mine Clearance Project (2023-2025) was held in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, on the 9th. Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, Wang Wentian, and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Deban jointly attended the ceremony. Wang Wentian said that Cambodia is one of the countries most seriously affected by landmines in the world, and a huge number of mines and unexploded ordnance have caused serious disasters to the Cambodian people. Since 2018, China has provided free assistance to the Cambodian government to support humanitarian demining operations in Cambodia. A total of 74.92 square kilometers of mined areas have been cleared, and more than 70000 mines and unexploded ordnance have been found and destroyed, benefiting more than 600000 people. On behalf of Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cambodian government, Deban thanked the Chinese side for its continuous support for humanitarian operations such as mine clearance in Cambodia. He pointed out that achieving the goal of no mines by 2025 is one of Cambodia's important national strategies. At present, there are about 650 square kilometers of mined areas in Cambodia that have not been cleared. He called on the international community to continue to increase its support for mine clearance operations in Cambodia. The implementation period of China's new phase of mine-clearing project in Cambodia will be from 2023 to 2025, and a total of 101.54 square kilometers of minefields will be cleared for Siem Reap, Poungton and Preah Vihear.
