Pottery jar with ears unearthed from Houzhai cemetery. The tomb of Houzhai provided by the Shanxi Provincial Academy of Archaeology is located in Houzhai Village, Shuocheng District, Shuozhou City, Shanxi Province. It is located in the key area where agricultural culture and nomadic culture blend. From October 2019 to December 2020, in order to cooperate with the construction of the new funeral home in Shuozhou, the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology and the local cultural relics department in Shuozhou carried out archaeological excavation of the cemetery, and a total of 321 tombs of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty were excavated. Most tombs have not unearthed any burial objects, and only 68 tombs have unearthed pottery that can be restored and identified. The burial objects are mainly pottery and bronze, including tripods, li, pots, pots, pots with ears, copper arrowheads, copper swords, etc. Pottery tripod unearthed in Houzhai cemetery. According to the difference of the main pottery combinations, the pottery tombs of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in Houzhai can be divided into three groups according to the pictures provided by the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology. The earthenware pots with ears, deep arc belly rope pots and other artifacts in Group A are similar to those unearthed in Eastern Zhou tombs in Inner Mongolia, which should be an archaeological culture different from the culture in the central and southern Inner Mongolia. In Group B, Li and Shikou drum belly pots are the most common combinations, which have been found in the Eastern Zhou Tomb at Lijiaya, Qingjian, and the North Qiji Tomb at Pingshan, Hebei. Therefore, group B population may be related to Baidi (an important branch of the pre-Qin Di nationality). In Group C, pottery sacrificial vessels such as tripods, beans, pots and so on are typical combination of artifacts. Among them, most of the largest belly diameters unearthed are located in the upper abdomen, and most of the tripods with sharp round bottom are unearthed in Xinzhou and Taiyuan. This area is the sphere of influence of the State of Zhao. Therefore, the people in Group C should be Zhao people. According to Ma Sheng, the person in charge of the excavation project, there are various kinds of burial objects in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in Houzhai Cemetery, which shows a very complex crowd characteristics, which is related to the local complex historical process in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty. From the artifacts unearthed in Houzhai Cemetery, the Shuozhou area should have been incorporated into the sphere of influence of the State of Zhao, but the local people were not expelled soon, but lived in the same area with the Zhao people, even buried in the same cemetery after death. Ma Sheng believes that the cultural factors of the tombs in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty in Houzhai are very complex, which is an important material for studying the process of Zhao's northward expansion and the blending of the indigenous culture in northern Jin, and has important academic value for studying the blending of the farming civilization in the Central Plains and the northern grassland civilization in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty.
