The First Building in the World, with the roast duck restaurant as the background, radiates the Beijing flavor culture with food and reflects the five flavors of life with sour, sweet, bitter and salty. This work, written by He Jiping and directed by Xia Chun and Gu Wei, was first performed in 1988. After more than 30 years and more than 500 performances, it still has a long history. In Gu Wei's view, the rich and refined content of the play, the popular stage form and the focus on portraying living people are the reasons why the play attracts the audience. "The First Building in the World", a classic shot by Li Chunguang, has been performed ever since. In 2021, the premiere of the new lineup of "The First Building in the World" was joined by young director Yan Rui. Wang Lei, Lei Jia, Yuan Yu, Sun Xing, Xie Tian, Zhao Zhengtian, Li Po, Zou Jian, Li Lin, Yang Mingxin, Yan Wei and other actors took over smoothly. Gu Wei said that this version of the performance you see now also bears the accumulation and creation of previous generations of actors. "Every generation of actors has their own creation, such as Chang Gui, played by Lin Liankun, who leans on the pillar. We need to learn that kind of relaxation. Ma Enran plays the deacon, many details of which are his own creation, and these are also left on the stage by later generations." There are both the accumulation of predecessors and the creation of new people. At the same time, the director is also constantly exploring the new core of the play. Wang Lei, a young actor who plays Lu Mengshi, said that such a work that the audience is familiar with is the actors' performance. This makes every actor full of awe for this work. "You can't stop at the moment. Every time you go on stage, you should have new enthusiasm to create. You should make the audience have expectations and want to see it after seeing it." As a work that is good at portraying characters, the various characters in "The First Building in the World" provide rich space for the actors to constantly polish. Lu Mengshi, played by Wang Lei, highlights the shrewdness and respect of businessmen. Lei Jia plays Tang Tou Chang Gui, who is positioned as "the existence of water", looking for the feeling of flowing on the stage.
