WTO: The growth of global trade in goods weakened in the fourth quarter of last year

2023-03-02

The World Trade Organization released a report on the 1st that the growth momentum of global trade in goods in the fourth quarter of 2022 will weaken, and this trend may continue in the first quarter of 2023. The latest issue of the "Barometer of Trade in Goods" released by the World Trade Organization showed that the prosperity index of global trade in goods was 92.2, lower than the benchmark of 100, slightly lower than the 96.2 released in November last year. Among the component indexes, the automobile product index is 105.8, higher than the trend level; The export order index was 97.4, slightly lower than the trend level. In addition, the container transport index, air transport index, electronic component index and raw material index are all lower than the trend level and show a downward trend, which means that trade weakness affects many industries. According to the report, the volume of global trade in goods in the third quarter of 2022 increased by 5.6% year-on-year, and 4.4% year-on-year in the first three quarters. The WTO believes that with the slowdown of the growth in the fourth quarter, the actual growth rate of global trade in goods last year may be close to the 3.5% previously predicted. According to the compilation rules of the global goods trade prosperity index, the value of 100 is its benchmark. If a certain index is 100, it means that the growth of global trade in goods is in line with the medium-term trend. An index greater than 100 indicates that the growth of global trade in goods in the quarter is higher than the expected level, and vice versa indicates that the growth of global trade in goods is lower than the expected level. In July 2016, the World Trade Organization released the global trade boom index for the first time. By collecting the trade statistics of major economies, it provides early signals on the short-term development trend of current world trade, and provides more timely international trade information for trade policy makers and the business community.
