AR headset allows users to "see" hidden objects

2023-03-01

According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on the 27th, researchers at MIT have manufactured an augmented reality (AR) headset that can give the wearer X-ray vision. The headset is called X-AR, which combines computer vision and wireless perception, and can automatically locate specific items hidden outside the line of sight and guide users to retrieve them. The system uses radio frequency (RF) signals, which can pass through common materials such as cartons, plastic containers or wooden partitions to find hidden items with RFID tags. When the wearer passes through a room, the headset will guide them to the position of the object, which is displayed as a transparent sphere in the AR interface. Once the item is in the user's hands, the headset will verify whether they have got the correct item. When researchers test X-AR in a similar warehouse environment, the headset can accurately locate hidden items within 9.8 cm on average, and the accuracy rate of the headset for users to pick up the correct items is 96%. X-AR can help e-commerce warehouse workers quickly find targets on the messy shelves or in the items in the box, or help workers find targets by identifying the exact items in the order. It can also be used by technicians in manufacturing factories to quickly locate the correct parts to assemble products. Researchers said that the project aims to establish an augmented reality system, which is equivalent to "seeing" the invisible, and then conducting accurate guidance, so that people can truly "see" the physical world in a way that was previously impossible. This research result means that the augmented reality system has taken an important step forward. In the future, researchers will plan to explore how to use different sensing modes, such as WiFi, millimeter wave technology or terahertz wave, to enhance its visualization and interaction capabilities.
