Start of digital camera 2023: Canon's price increases, Sony's capacity changes, and Nikon's licensing

2023-02-09

In another year of "being replaced by smart phones", the beginning of digital cameras is a little more subtle: Canon's price rises, Sony's production capacity is concentrated, and Nikon's external compatibility. According to the "Canon Product Price Adjustment Notice" issued by Canon (China) Co., Ltd. to dealers, the company has adjusted the price of some products since February 1 this year. Among them, the main reason for the price adjustment was the continuous rise in the prices of raw materials and logistics and transportation costs. From the perspective of channel price changes, the price increase of products is basically within 300 yuan, and some products are more than 500 yuan. It is also understood that at the end of last year, Canon has repeatedly adjusted the pricing of products in overseas markets. Shortly before the official price adjustment day, Canon Group released its 2022 annual financial report, with a year-on-year growth of 14.7% in its turnover, "exceeding 4 trillion yen for the first time in five years". In the field of imaging business, including cameras, the turnover increased by 22.9% year on year, and the number of special and micro cameras increased year on year. In the financial report, the full-frame special and micro cameras EOS R5 and EOS R6, as well as the APS-C frame EOS R7 and EOS R10 were specifically mentioned. In contrast, Sony's adjustment in camera business seems to be more extensive, but this adjustment is also fundamentally related to price strategy and profit target. In addition, Canon has taken similar actions before, closing some camera factories in China and transferring production lines to Japan. According to public information, Sony Group has transferred the production of cameras sold in Japan, America and Europe from China to Thailand, and the Chinese factories will only produce products for China in principle. However, camera lenses and other products produced in China will continue to be supplied to markets outside China. Among the reasons for capacity transfer, "decentralized supply chain risk" is included. According to other public data, Sony sold about 2.11 million cameras worldwide in 2022, of which the proportion of products for markets outside China such as Japan, the United States and Europe accounted for about 90%. This may also be accompanied by Sony's redefinition of its corporate positioning and the adjustment of its operating strategy in the Chinese market. In terms of enterprise positioning, in Sony's 2021 financial year report released in the first half of this year, the "Electronic Products and Solutions (EPS)" business was renamed "Entertainment, Technology and Services (ETS)", which can be seen as strengthening the concept of "Sony is a creative entertainment company based on solid technology". At the relatively important CES exhibition at the beginning of the year, Sony also took "technology" and "entertainment" as the core words, and consumer electronic terminals did not make much display and mention. In addition to the current situation of digital cameras in the consumer market, in the view of Dingjie.com, the future trend of camera products in Sony's system is likely to be more focused on professional users and as an important part of entertainment related imaging solutions. After all, on the consumer side, Sony's related imaging business seems to be paying more and more attention to the power of the mobile end (smart phone). After Sony Image Sensor has established a certain order of magnitude advantage in the market, it is also striving to achieve a broad understanding of its "role and contribution in mobile phone photography". At the end of last year, Sony launched a new image sensor for mobile phones
