Russian and Turkish leaders call to discuss food corridors and natural gas hubs

2022-12-12

Russian President Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a telephone conversation on the 11th to discuss food corridors, the establishment of natural gas hubs in Türkiye and other issues. According to the news released by the Russian President's website, the leaders of the two countries discussed the implementation of the agreement on the export of agricultural products from Black Sea ports reached by all parties in July this year and the export of Russian agricultural products and fertilizers to the international market. The two sides said that the above-mentioned agreement is holistic, so it is necessary to remove the barriers to Russia's export to countries in need. In addition, the two sides stressed the special importance of developing joint energy projects in the field of natural gas. The two sides will continue to exchange views on the establishment of a regional natural gas hub in Türkiye. The two sides also communicated on bilateral relations, the situation in Ukraine and the Syrian issue. In July this year, Russia and Ukraine signed relevant agreements with Türkiye and the United Nations on the export of agricultural products from Black Sea ports. The agreement is valid for 120 days and expires on November 19. At the same time, Russia has signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations on Russian agricultural exports to ensure that Russian food and fertilizers can enter the world market unhindered. On November 17, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that the Russian Ukrainian agricultural export package agreement would be extended for 120 days without any objection from all parties. Putin proposed in October that Russia could supply gas to Europe through Türkiye and build Europe's largest natural gas hub in Türkiye. Erdogan then agreed. At the beginning of November, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Denmez said that Türkiye had finalized the location of the natural gas hub and started relevant negotiations with Russia.
