Growing with Great Cause -- Dialogue with Li Yinghui, Deputy Chief Designer of the Astronaut System of China's Manned Space Engineering

2022-12-09

Ten years ago, President Xi formally put forward the "Chinese Dream" when visiting the "Road to Revival" exhibition. He pointed out that "realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is the greatest dream of the Chinese nation since modern times." The Chinese Dream leads the Space Dream, and the Space Dream helps the Chinese Dream. Ten years later, China's manned space flight will use a romantic "space meeting" to mark a new coordinate on the road of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation - in the morning of November 30, 2022, the Shenzhou 15 astronauts will enter the China Space Station in a crew and meet with the Shenzhou XIV astronauts. China's manned space flight ushers in another historic moment, and the Chinese space station is about to start an era of long-term manned presence. Manned space flight is one of the major scientific and technological innovations of the new era in the decade mentioned by President Xi in his report to the Twentieth National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and it is also the dream of the Chinese people for thousands of years. On September 21, 1992, China's manned space program was approved for implementation. From unmanned to manned, from short-term stay to medium and long-term stay, from in cabin experiments to space walks, the manned space project has made a step by step progress, and the "three-step" development strategy has been steadily promoted. Over the past three decades, generations of astronauts have been working hard to constantly refresh the "space altitude" of Chinese people. In this science and technology interview, we specially invited Li Yinghui, the deputy chief designer of China's manned space program astronaut system and the chief engineer in charge of the space station's space medicine experiment field, to talk about her "space dream" and China's manned space flight in her eyes from the frontier perspective of space medicine. Each of our "gears" turns the reporter for the same belief: Recently, the Shenzhou 15 spacecraft was successfully launched, and another group of astronauts entered the Chinese space station. Today, our astronauts can stay in the Chinese space station for six months. What impact will such a long stay in space have on astronauts? Li Yinghui: The vast space is profound and beautiful, but full of risks. Long term stay in space will mainly affect human physiology. Compared with the earth environment, the greatest feature of the space environment is the loss of gravity, which is commonly referred to as weightlessness. Weightlessness will lead to changes in the function and structure of the body's gravity sensing organ system, such as cardiovascular dysfunction, muscle atrophy, bone loss, etc. Therefore, we must effectively protect astronauts. Counter defense is the core technology and capability to support the long-term presence of manned spaceflight. We have a subsystem of protection against physiological effects of weightlessness, which specializes in the study of countermeasures. The Shenzhou 12 crew achieved a leap from short-term flight to long-term stay, and the Shenzhou 13 crew returned healthy after 183 days of space stay; After the success of the Shenzhou XIV manned mission, Chen Dong became the first Chinese astronaut to stay on orbit for more than 200 days. He is currently in good health... All these show that our comprehensive protective measures are very effective. In addition, radiation, narrow environment and clinical medical problems in space environment will also bring medical risks. In this regard, we have also formed a series of effective medical protective measures. Reporter: One of the important tasks of astronauts on the space station is to conduct on orbit experiments. What achievements have been made in on orbit experiments in the field of aerospace medicine? Li
