On December 4, 2022, the Chinese listed company governance index release and academic seminar were held in Tianjin. Li Wei'an, a chair professor of Nankai University and president of the China Institute of Corporate Governance, released the 2022 Chinese listed company green governance (ESG) index (CGGI) at the conference. This is the reapplication of the green governance (ESG) evaluation system by the China Institute of Corporate Governance since it released the world's first Green Governance Guidelines in 2017 and released the green governance (ESG) index of Chinese listed companies for four consecutive times in 2018-2021. At present, the conflict between environment and development is intensifying, and the ecological environment problem is becoming increasingly prominent. The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China put forward the overall goal of "extensively forming a green production and lifestyle, stabilizing and decreasing carbon emissions after reaching the peak, and fundamentally improving the ecological environment". It has become a consensus to achieve the inclusive development of people and nature. With the ESG investment scale reaching a new high, the ESG evaluation institution and evaluation system developing vigorously, and the ESG information disclosure policy strengthening, ESG has gradually become an evaluation tool and action guide for the sustainable development of enterprises. In this context, the green governance concept of "harmony between man and nature" has been proposed as a major topic. The governance that attaches importance to environment (E) and society (S) is green governance (ESG). On the basis of the promotion and implementation of the Green Governance Guidelines, adhering to the core concepts and principles of green governance, and by building a green governance (ESG) index to effectively evaluate the actual effect of green governance, we can accurately grasp the basic situation and level of green governance in China at this stage, so as to objectively reflect the status quo of green governance of listed companies as key actors of green governance and the challenges they face, This is of great significance to theoretical innovation and practical guidance. The effective evaluation sample of the green governance (ESG) index of listed companies in China is 1366 (as of April 30, 2022, the listed companies that disclosed the 2021 social responsibility report on CNINFO, excluding the companies newly listed in 2022), including 1025 main board non-financial listed companies, 146 GEM non-financial listed companies, 84 science and technology innovation board listed companies, and 111 financial institutions. The green governance (ESG) evaluation system of Chinese listed companies mainly involves four dimensions: green governance structure, green governance mechanism, green governance effectiveness and green governance responsibility. The evaluation results show that the average value of the green governance (ESG) index of listed companies in China in 2022 is 56.58, which is 0.45 higher than 56.13 in 2021. There is still much room for improvement in the green governance of listed companies.
