"Revival" Stone Carving

2022-12-02

Li Renqing is a representative inheritor of the high relief art of the provincial intangible cultural heritage in Henan Province. In the late 1980s, Li Renqing began to explore the three-dimensional rubbing on high relief stone carvings. Different from the traditional plane rubbing, the high relief rubbing needs to cut the soaked rice paper along the outline of the three-dimensional statue and press it directly on each part. Therefore, the rice paper after rubbing is fragmented, while Li Renqing needs to glue hundreds of pieces together to form a whole plane work. The high relief inheritance technique converts immovable cultural relics into movable cultural relics in a ratio of 1:1, and even records the cracks, denudation and other diseases on the stone carvings, providing accurate information for observation and protection of cultural relics. Today, Li Renqing has received five apprentices, his son and daughter-in-law are also his students, and hundreds of students have listened to his lectures. He also often displays his works over the years in the temporary exhibition hall of the museum, and sets up an experience area to teach skills.
