US Air Force Promotes "Aircraft Transformation" Program

2022-11-16

According to the US Defense News website, the US Air Force is developing and testing a series of new technologies to discover the extended functions of transport aircraft, bombers and tankers for tasks beyond the original design. The US Air Force believes that more military aircraft are needed to deal with the future high-intensity armed conflict, but the US Congress will not approve additional budget support. Therefore, it is considered to expand the use of existing military aircraft to make up for it, and improve the US Air Force's ability to bear war damage in future armed conflict. It is reported that the relevant tests have been completed for the "Xunlong" tray launch system, an important project developed by the US Air Force. This tray launching system is a box type ammunition cabin based on the pallet of a transport aircraft, which is mounted with JASSM-ER standoff cruise missiles and can be loaded into the cargo cabin of a MC-130J or C-17 transport aircraft. When the transport plane arrives at the designated airspace, it can throw the tray launching system with parachute out, and the tray launching system will then release cruise missiles in the air to carry out accurate attack on the enemy target. According to the US Air Force, after using this system, all large and medium-sized military transport planes equipped by the US Air Force can become bombers and launch cruise missiles. While endowing the transport aircraft with the bomber function, the US Air Force is also testing to expand the transport function for the bomber. In August this year, the Baxter Air Force Base in Louisiana announced that it had successfully conducted the test of the B-52H strategic bomber to transport 4536 kg of cargo. According to the US Air Force, the B-52H strategic bomber has two cargo boxes named "airborne cargo system" attached in the bomb compartment, and each cargo box can be loaded with maintenance support equipment with a maximum weight of 2268 kg. This allows the B-52H strategic bomber to carry maintenance tools, spare parts and other materials when arriving at the deployment site. According to the US Air Force Global Strike Command, this is in line with the concept of "agile combat deployment" of the US military. The concept of "agile combat deployment" emphasizes that USAF personnel and aircraft should be distributed in a network form in an area to improve the ability to withstand enemy attacks. At present, the US Air Force's E-3 early warning aircraft is getting old. The first E-7 early warning aircraft is expected to be delivered in 2027. It will take longer to reach a certain number to form a reliable combat effectiveness. To this end, the US Air Force began to install corresponding equipment for tankers to replace AWACS in carrying out tasks such as information transmission and sharing, and battlefield management. This summer, the US Air Force KC-46 tanker deployed in Qatar successfully transformed the tanker into an information transmission node by connecting the ground air operation command center with nearby military aircraft using the additional airborne system. The senior management of the US Air Force said that the KC-46 tanker, in addition to its refueling capability, also has the ability to establish information data connections with individual soldiers and provide real-time battlefield environment awareness information. At a round table meeting in September, Chief of Staff Brown of the US Air Force said that, in addition to expanding the use of military aircraft, the US Air Force also hopes to strengthen the ability and skills training of its personnel. For example, the US Air Force plans to train maintenance personnel to mount ammunition or refuel aircraft and other related skills. When armed conflict breaks out, maintenance personnel can take more responsibility in case of lack of personnel
