2022-11-14

On the afternoon of November 13 local time, Premier Li Keqiang met with UN Secretary General Guterres in Phnom Penh. Li Keqiang expressed that the United Nations is the most important institution to safeguard multilateralism. China has always attached great importance to the important role played by the United Nations in maintaining world peace and promoting common development. In the current complex and volatile international situation, to uphold multilateralism is fundamentally to uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the authoritative role of the UN in handling international affairs. Support and input to the United Nations is a contribution to world peace and development. China appreciates the new achievements made in the cause of the United Nations under the leadership of Secretary General Guterres, and will, as always, strengthen cooperation with United Nations agencies, actively support and participate in the work of the United Nations, work with all parties to uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, uphold the norms of international law, and safeguard international fairness and justice. Li Keqiang pointed out that poverty is bound to impact stability. Without narrowing the gap between the North and the South, it is difficult to avoid conflict and turbulence. China appreciates that the United Nations pays close attention to the development problems of developing countries and actively provides assistance to developing countries in alleviating their debt burden, coping with climate change, improving people's well-being and achieving sustainable development. As a permanent member of the Security Council and the largest developing country, China is willing to maintain close communication and coordination with the United Nations, continue to provide support to developing countries in their ability to cope with climate change under the framework of South South cooperation, and is willing to play a constructive role in dealing with debt relief issues of African countries under the framework of the Group of 20. Guterres said that cooperation between China and the United Nations is an important pillar of multilateralism. The United Nations appreciates China's great efforts to promote multilateralism, and positively evaluates China's contribution to advancing the UN agenda on addressing climate change and achieving sustainable development. He hoped to deepen cooperation with China to help developing countries cope with climate change, ease their debt burden, safeguard international food and energy security, and let the UN agenda receive more and more support from countries. The United Nations opposes economic decoupling and advocates that all countries bridge their differences through dialogue and jointly address global challenges. The United Nations firmly supports China's important role in South South cooperation and is willing to continue to strengthen cooperation with China in this regard. Xiao Jie attended the meeting.
