Chief Engineer of "Rainbow" UAV talks about the future UAV battlefield

2022-11-11

Editor's Note: Due to the rapid development of unmanned technology and the experience and lessons from several local conflicts in recent years, various types of UAV models with different purposes were displayed at this Zhuhai Air Show, and various anti UAV equipment also appeared. Just as the so-called "contradiction counteracts", which direction should UAV develop in the future? How to adapt to the needs of the future battlefield? The reporter interviewed Shi Wen, chief engineer of the Rainbow UAV series. How to Use UAVs Reasonably in Combination with Mission Needs At this Zhuhai Airshow, there were high-end stealth UAVs such as "Attack-11", "Rainbow - 7", "Feihong - 97A" and "Skyhawk", as well as "Pterosaur - 2/3", "Rainbow - 4/5" and other hollow surveillance UAVs that emphasized the ability of long endurance, as well as small UAVs and patrol missiles that highlighted low-cost strike characteristics. Which is more suitable for the future battlefield? Shi Wen said that the essential advantage of UAV compared with manned aircraft is to reduce the risk of personnel loss and reduce the use cost. Therefore, he believes that in the early stage of large-scale conflict, various advanced UAVs can assist manned aircraft to undertake tasks such as loyal wingmen and air defense suppression, but the scene where UAVs can play a better role in combat effectiveness is actually the middle and late stage of the conflict. With local air control, our side uses UAVs to monitor the theater for a long time, identify sensitive targets and strike, And conduct electromagnetic countermeasures and electromagnetic barrier operations. From this perspective, not all UAVs must pursue advanced features such as stealth, but should use UAVs more reasonably in combination with mission requirements. The US Defense News had previously commented that traditional military concepts believed that non stealth UAVs had poor survivability in modern wars, but the lessons learned from the Russian Ukrainian conflict made global military analysts rethink. At the early stage of the Russian Ukrainian conflict, even the Russian army with fairly advanced field air defense and regional air defense capabilities failed to completely block the Ukrainian army from attacking with the less advanced TB-2 UAV. Although the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has its particularity, it is sufficient to prove that the non stealth UAV still has a strong viability in the large-scale conflict in a vast area, and with the continuation of the war, the main battle equipment of both sides continues to lose, the air defense capability continues to decline, and the living conditions of the non stealth UAV are greatly improved. Shi Wen said that under such a background, traditional non stealth UAVs are of great use. For example, he said that the Russian Ukrainian conflict has now evolved into a guerrilla war under the conditions of modern war technology, or called "distributed war" according to the United States. The Uzbek army used the "Hippocampus" rocket to wander around on a small scale, and according to the information provided by NATO, implemented the "hit and go" tactics against important targets of the Russian army. However, if the Russian army can reasonably use the hollow long endurance surveillance and strike integrated UAV to continuously monitor the shallow and deep areas tens of kilometers away from the front line, the "Hippocampus" launcher, which lacks the protection of air defense capability, will have nowhere to hide in front of the commanding air force. Once its whereabouts are exposed, it will be attacked by missiles launched by the surveillance and strike integrated UAV. Shi Wen also stressed that in modern wars, the two warring parties first fight for electromagnetic control of the battlefield, and cut off the opponents through soft and hard means
