Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics: Devoting Youth to China's Aerospace Industry

2022-10-25

On October 25, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics celebrated its 70th anniversary. This is a special day when the first battle of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea was launched. The smoke of gunpowder filled the bank of Yalu River, and the enemy planes roared and knocked at the heartstrings of Wang Yongzhi, a young man in the countryside. He wanted to "learn biology and improve production" and suddenly realized that without a solid national defense, everything is just empty talk. Qi Faren, a fellow villager from Liaoning Province who was in the same term with him, resolutely filled in all the volunteers as aviation colleges and universities. "An aviation university is in urgent need", Premier Zhou Enlai made a judgment based on the situation. At that time, teachers from the aviation departments of eight domestic colleges and universities gathered in one place, and young people from all over the country rushed to come. In 1952, Beijing Institute of Aeronautics was officially established on the anniversary of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea. Born for the country and working with the country, aerospace service is engraved in the gene of Beihang. On the stage of inheriting the red gene of sky and sky, the light is getting darker. The engines of J-15 fighter jets roared, and the crowd celebrating the ship's successful missed approach cheered, but Luo Yang could only hear his heartbeat gradually weakening. Off the stage, freshmen listened attentively to Luo Yang's inner monologue, and some of their classmates had already shed tears. "Are you ready to contribute all your youth and life to China's aerospace industry with the commitment and responsibility of Beihang people?" Luo Yang's question echoed on the stage and in the minds of Beihang students. This is a scene of the musical "Luoyang" performed by the students of Beihang University. Luo Yang, an alumnus of Beijing Airlines and the commander in chief of the development site of the J-15 fighter who died in the line of duty, integrated the aerospace national service red gene of "patriotic dedication, courage to be the first, unity and hard work, and responsibility" into his life, inspiring the later generations to tell the story of the predecessors. In the 1950s, Baiyanzhuang, the northwest suburb of Beijing urban area, where Beihang was located, was still a desolate wasteland. At that time, many classes were held in the work shed. Academician Chen Maozhang, the first graduate, recalled: "It was much colder in Beijing then than it is now. At midnight, the kitchen changed from the work shed to bring Lantern Festival back to the dormitory, and it froze before the dormitory arrived!" In order to build the school as soon as possible, students took part in voluntary labor, sang songs in autumn, and moved bricks to build roads and level the playground in winter. The ideal of serving the country by air and space encouraged them to overcome difficulties and devote themselves to learning. "At that time, some patriotic young people wanted to design airplanes for the motherland. Our graduation project was Beijing No. 1." In 1959, the news that a ground to air missile shot down the plane made Shen Zhongfang know that to deal with the enemy's plane, it was not only to build your own plane. "At that time, everyone had a thought that without advanced missiles, there would be no strong national defense, and we must do something about it." So Shen Zhongfang resolutely put himself into missile research and became an anonymous hero behind the scenes. His identity as the commander in chief of the third generation air defense weapon system was not revealed until 2022. "I am an aviation student. After graduation, I first went to engage in missiles, then launch vehicles, and then satellites. In 1992, I was asked to engage in spaceships... Manned spaceflight was a matter of life. At that time, I was 59 years old." Again and again, Qi Faren decided to obey the organization's arrangements. "Following the Party and engaging in aerospace" is the coordinate of his life. Years later, Wang Yongzhi and Qi Faren grew up separately
