Reading Lu Chunxiang's prose collection "Brocade in the Clouds": Who sends brocade books in the clouds

2022-09-28

Lu Chunxiang is a prose writer who focuses on the resources of Chinese classical notes and endows them with a contemporary tone. As its latest collection of essays, "Brocade in the Clouds" is a collection of notes about note writers. In a review article, I defined Lu Chunxiang's creation as an original note style essay at the stylistic level. Mr. Lu Xun once proposed that the selection of materials should be strict and the exploration should be deep. For Lu Chunxiang, it can be compared with the concentration of material selection and the continuous exploration. Lu Chunxiang's concentration, solidity and sufficiency of his lessons, deference of his ideas and changes in his handling all contribute to the depth of his series of notes. The reason why this work is "boiled" is particularly good, on the one hand, due to the formula, on the other hand, due to the author's subjective mentality. At the formula level, in the preamble, the author gathered nine famous classical note takers of different ages in a high hall, let them open a forum lively, and pretended to be secretaries, living in a corner of the meeting place to make notes. This ingenious design actually reflects the writer's efforts to return to the historical scene and get close to specific individuals through rich historical materials. At the aspect of writer's mentality, we can see the author's relaxation when writing the preface in a moment, and there is always a sense of humor in it. The Brocade in the Clouds is written by nine representative writers of Chinese classical notes. They are Duan Chengshi of the Tang Dynasty, Shen Kuo of the Northern Song Dynasty, Ye Mengde of the Northern Song Dynasty and the Southern Song Dynasty, Hong Mai and Zhou Mi of the Southern Song Dynasty, Tao Zongyi of the Yuan Dynasty, Liu Ji of the early Ming Dynasty, Li Yu of the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty, and Yuan Mei of the Qing Dynasty. From this list, we can see the weight of the writer's choice and evaluation of classical note writers, and also the prosperity of notes in the Song Dynasty. The "Brocade in Clouds" has 260000 words, and the words allocated to 9 note writers are close to 30000 on average, regardless of the preface and postscript. The content of the collection is actually 9 character sketches, and each work can be roughly divided into the origin, official career or asking about the student career, note writing, things after death, and visiting the old place. The origin part generally starts from the family background of the note writer, focusing on the family members who have an important impact on the growth of the young people, in which the role of father appears more frequently. In the part of official career or student career, in addition to Tao Zongyi and Li Yu, all of the nine writers entered the official career early through the imperial examination or recommendation. They were young talents and had outstanding political achievements. Finally, they retired to their study and took note writing as their life return. In the part of note writing, in addition to reviewing the creation time and mentality of the note works, Lu Chunxiang rarely stood in the words and commented positively on the achievements and losses of "Old Wulin Events" or "Leisure Incidents", but outlined the solid foundation of the writers' creation, their erudition and strong notes, their interest in unofficial stories, and their interests that could not be realized at that time. The following part is brief, describing the ending moment of the writers' lives with simple lines. In the part of visit to the former place, the narration is about the "I"'s visit, which tries to awaken a special warmth and respect in the material relics through paying homage to the former residence and cemetery. The logic in this is that, as the Swiss thinker Amir declared, a natural landscape is a realm of mind. According to Volume E in the book——
