Calligraphy has officially become a first-class discipline. What does this change mean?

2022-09-26

On September 13, 2022, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education printed and distributed the new version of the Catalog of Postgraduate Education Disciplines (2022) (hereinafter referred to as the Catalog) and the Administrative Measures for the Catalog of Postgraduate Education Disciplines, which formally listed "Art and Calligraphy" as a first-class discipline. Since the second half of 2023, the training of postgraduate students who started enrollment will be implemented according to the new version of disciplines and specialties. It is less than one year from the time of soliciting opinions on December 10, 2021 to the time of officially positioning as a first-class discipline. The discussion on the rationality and necessity of calligraphy becoming a first level discipline and a special type of doctoral degree, as well as the future development of the discipline and the employment situation of students, is constantly emerging. In this regard, the reporter talked with relevant people to fully understand the system construction and design considerations behind the profession. The space from art majors to first level disciplines has expanded a lot than that of second level disciplines. According to public data, in 1963, China Academy of Fine Arts set up the calligraphy undergraduate major for the first time. However, before the implementation of this new version of the Catalog, calligraphy majors were recruited as art majors, which were four year undergraduate majors (some colleges have junior colleges) in parallel with art and music majors. According to incomplete statistics by the reporter, before the release of the new edition of the Catalogue, about 140 colleges and universities in China had set up calligraphy undergraduate majors, and nearly 34 colleges and universities and research institutes recruited calligraphy graduate students. So, what does it mean that calligraphy is included in the first level discipline? Chu Zhaohui, a researcher of the Chinese Academy of Educational Sciences, told the reporter: "Becoming a first-class discipline means that it can continue to set up secondary disciplines under its branches. The space is much wider than that of secondary disciplines." Why are calligraphy students keen on postgraduate entrance examination? The employment scope is narrow, and the difficulty of postgraduate entrance examination is low. Mr. Zhang, a calligraphy major from a postgraduate entrance examination training institution, told the reporter that most calligraphy students will choose to engage in calligraphy teaching after graduation. However, because the posts of calligraphy teachers in primary and secondary schools across the country have not been really set up, most graduates can only engage in hard pen or brush calligraphy training, and the employment mode is relatively single. Therefore, more calligraphy undergraduate students, under the pressure of employment, choose to continue their studies. Teacher Li, another trainee in calligraphy at the postgraduate entrance examination institution, also said that most students choose to study for a master's or doctor's degree in calligraphy in order to obtain more employment opportunities and expand their future promotion space. "For example, if you want to enter an authoritative calligraphy association or teach in a university, and want to obtain a higher professional title evaluation, education is a threshold." The Employment Quality Report of the Graduates of Hubei Academy of Fine Arts in 2021 released by Hubei Academy of Fine Arts in January 2022 shows that the employment units of calligraphy graduates are mainly in education (33.33%), culture, sports and entertainment (33.33%), and leasing and business services (33.33%). Of course, Mr. Yang, who is also a calligraphy professional training teacher, told the reporter that although the employment mode of calligraphy students is relatively simple, the cross professional phenomenon of postgraduate entrance examination is quite common. On the one hand, although it is not easy to find a good job in this industry, it is also a good choice for many people to enter an educational institution to teach or become a calligraphy teacher in primary and secondary schools after graduation
