Thoughts on promoting East Asian Studies in China

2022-08-22

The world today is an open world, and China today is an open China. With the increasingly close relationship between China and the outside world, it is more and more urgent to know and understand the outside world. Based on this, comprehensive and comprehensive research on politics, economy, society, culture and military affairs of a specific country or region has been conducted, that is, regional and country studies have sprung up in China's academic circles, and relevant research institutions have been established one after another. In the catalogue of disciplines and disciplines for conferring doctorate and master's degrees and personnel training (Draft for comments) issued by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, it is proposed to add the first level discipline of "regional and national studies" under the category of "interdisciplinary", which ushers in new opportunities for the development of regional and national studies in China. The articles published in this journal respectively introduce the origin, development and Prospect of China's East Asian Studies, African Studies and Latin American Studies for the readers. As far as East Asian studies are concerned, the Japanese academic circles have been initially involved as early as the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. However, Chinese academic circles generally believe that a comprehensive study conducted by western academic circles in the 1950s and 1960s around the political, economic and military interests of Europe and the United States in East Asia is called "East Asian Studies". It is marked by the establishment of the center for East Asian Studies at Harvard University by Fei Zhengqing, Lai Xiaoer and others. It has had an important impact on East Asian Studies in the world in terms of discipline system, research paradigm and discourse form. The subject, content, theory, field of vision, method and discipline construction of East Asian Studies in Chinese academic circles are mostly influenced by the East Asian Studies in Europe and America. Of course, there is no lack of practical criticism on the text misreading, theory first, politicization of academic issues and the implied Western centrism. At a time when China's regional and national studies are becoming increasingly important, to improve the level of East Asian Studies, it is necessary to clarify China's existing academic resources and research foundation, summarize overseas academic experience, make good use of the strong points, complement the weak points, and bring forth new ones. First, although the "East Asia" and its "East Asian Studies" in the modern academic sense do not originate in China, the relevant contents involved are reflected in different degrees in China's ancient academic tradition and modern academic transformation. In general, the following three types of academic resources can be roughly sorted out. First, China's ancient traditional historical documents have certain records on the ethnic origin and national development in East Asia such as Korea, South Korea and Japan, especially the "foreign biography" and "the biography of the four barbarians" in the "twenty four histories". Second, modern China was invaded by imperialist powers. In order to save the national crisis and "look at the world with an open mind", some people with lofty ideals compiled and published many foreign political, economic, historical, geographical and cultural works and newspapers, of which the introduction to Japan was the most, such as Huang Zunxian's national chronicle of Japan. Third, after the founding of new China, the discipline of world history was formally established. Within the discipline system of world history, the national history based on the nation-state and the regional history based on a certain region have been further developed. However, with the development of the discipline and the deepening of academic research, the disadvantages of the dual division structure of "Chinese history" and "world history" have begun to appear, and it is difficult to further study some problems in the field of East Asian studies that need to penetrate and break through the history of a country. Therefore, it is necessary to break the existing division of disciplines and advocate a multidimensional approach
