Weapon knowledge - what is the warship doing during the process of "cocooning into a butterfly" from launch to delivery

2022-08-12

Launching refers to the process of transferring a ship from the berth and dock of a shipyard to the water. At present, there are two main types of warship launching: dock launching and berth launching. The former includes two types of fixed dock launching and floating dock launching, and the latter includes three types of reverse, side sliding and lifting. In principle, it can be divided into gravity type, floating type and mechanical type. Delivery, in short, refers to the transfer of the ownership of warships, which is transferred from the shipyard to the Navy and put into use. It is a sign of the completion of the construction of warships. So, how long will it take for the warships to be delivered to the troops after they are launched? What work have the warships been doing during this period? (Britain once planned to increase the proportion of pre outfitting work of Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier to more than 80% of outfitting work.) Changing "long block" to "increasing connotation" to manufacture warships requires advanced technology and complex processes, which takes a long time and costs a lot of money. Little steps make a thousand miles. If it is said that building warships is a great project "to a thousand miles", then launching warships is a key step in the "small steps". It is a special process from launching to delivery. In this process, warships no longer focus on "long and big" as before, and begin to focus on "increasing connotation" -- reflected in the work level, the first is to improve the onboard facilities, which is referred to as outfitting. As the saying goes, you can't do porcelain without diamond. If a warship wants to be brave and good at fighting in various combat missions in the future, it must first have "diamond". Outfitting is the process of giving warships "diamond". These "diamond" include not only complex battlefield perception, information transmission, command and control systems, but also various weapons and equipment. The construction of these systems is generally very precise. Because warships are prone to generate large vibration when they are launched, these precision instruments or weapons are usually installed after the warships are launched. Outfitting work is complicated and involves a large amount of work. Take the pipeline to be laid on the USS Bush as an example, with a total length of 400 kilometers and a total length of 2700 kilometers of various cables. Even for small frigates, although sparrows are small, they have all the five organs, and there are many outfitting procedures, and one step can not be less. Because it is "fine work", it usually takes more time. In addition, there are many special equipment on the ship, such as electronic equipment on the ship Island, fuel supply equipment, landing guidance equipment, and arresting equipment. Almost all of them have their own unique installation requirements, so they pay more attention to "slow work and meticulous work". In this process, a slight omission may bury hidden dangers or cause accidents. In July 2020, the USS Kennedy, the Ford class aircraft carrier 2 of the US Navy, caught fire during the outfitting, and even almost burned the reactor. Although the fire was soon put out, the outfitting work was still suspended. Until the cause of the fire was investigated, the outfitting work of the aircraft carrier could continue. This led to a delay in the service time of the aircraft carrier. This shows the complexity of the outfitting work of warships. Relevant data show that it generally takes more than two years for a medium-sized aircraft carrier that can carry a carrier plane with sliding jump takeoff to be built,
