Israeli experts remind: hidden dangers of gene editing therapy

2022-08-01

A new study in Israel found that although CRISPR gene editing technology, which has been used to treat cancer and other diseases, is very effective, it is not absolutely safe. This technology may lead to the loss of genetic material, thus affecting the stability of the genome, and may even cause cancer in the long run. The researchers suggest that attention should be paid to safety hazards when using CRISPR gene editing therapy. CRISPR is a pioneering technology for editing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), which can be used to delete or add DNA fragments by cutting DNA sequences. In order to investigate the impact of this technology on human T cells, Israeli researchers tried to use CRISPR technology to cut chromosomes 2, 7 and 14 of T cell genome, and then use single-cell RNA (ribonucleic acid) sequencing technology to measure the expression level of each chromosome in each cell. The results showed that genetic material loss was significant in some cells. According to the researchers, the genome in human cells is often broken due to natural reasons, but it can usually repair itself without causing any damage. However, sometimes damaged chromosomes cannot be recovered, which may affect genome stability, which is common in cancer cells. Therefore, CRISPR, a method for treating cancer and other diseases by intentionally cutting DNA, may also cause malignant tumors in extreme cases. (outlook new era)
