The earliest gold and bronze Buddha statue in China was exhibited to the public for the first time

On June 10, sponsored by the Provincial Bureau of cultural relics and organized by the hanjingdi Yangling Museum and the Provincial Institute of archaeology, the "Fanxiang Dongcheng - special exhibition of gold and bronze Buddha statues of the Eastern Han Dynasty in Chengren village, Xianyang, Shaanxi" was held at the hanjingdi Yangling Museum as a gift on the 2022 cultural and natural heritage day. This exhibition is an important archaeological achievement in 2021 - the gold bronze standing Buddha and five gold bronze Buddha statues unearthed from the Eastern Han family cemetery in Chengren village, Xianyang, Shaanxi Province are exhibited to the public for the first time. The exhibition is divided into three units, namely, "the splendor of Xianyang ancient road is startled", "the golden people from the long silk road come to the west" and "Chinese and foreign fusion of Chinese rhymes and Sanskrit tones", focusing on the core exhibits of two gold and bronze Buddha statues. In May, 2021, Shaanxi Institute of archaeology excavated a family cemetery of the Eastern Han Dynasty in Chengren village, Beidu street, Weicheng District, Xianyang city. Two gold and bronze Buddha statues were unearthed in tomb 3015. This discovery has refreshed the upper limit of the age of the ancient local single Buddha statues in China. It is of great significance to the study of the social culture of Chang'an area in the Eastern Han Dynasty, the spread of early Buddhism and the cultural exchange between China and the West. It has been widely concerned by the society. It is reported that this special exhibition of gold and bronze Buddha statues will last for 3 months, and the hanjingdi Yangling museum will successively launch a series of promotion activities related to the exhibition, such as lectures, virtual exhibitions, exhibition interpretation, social education activities, etc. (Xinhua News Agency)
