British Army starts training transformation plan system design ahead of schedule

2022-06-08

According to foreign media reports, the British army recently announced that it would spend 600million euros (1 euro about 7.2 yuan) to purchase a new training and simulation system (hereinafter referred to as the new system). The 15 year contract aims to promote the transformation of British army training. The extent to which the new system can improve the operational level of the British army has aroused widespread concern. Advanced system design It is reported that the new system is an integrated training platform for the British army from the platoon level to the division level. It is guided by advanced technology and aims to change the traditional training mode. It adopts digital construction and immersive training environment. It will comprehensively use real-time, visual and intelligent means to upgrade and transform the original system. Relying on massive training data, battlefield information and updated hardware equipment, it will help the British army better adapt to the future combat environment. The new system will work in two ways. First, ensure that all training elements are connected smoothly. By building a unified standard network, the new system will ensure that the training data is updated in time, the trainers / trainees / supervisors communicate in real time, and the simulation operation process is stable and reliable. The second is to deeply mine the training related data. The new system will ensure that all kinds of data are directly reflected in the training process, and conduct real-time analysis of exercise and operational data. It is reported that the British army will define the specific index requirements for the new system in 2023. At present, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Babcock and other defense companies are bidding for the project. The British army will select one of them to undertake R & D tasks and list it as a long-term strategic partner. Explore feasible solutions The British Army attaches importance to the preliminary preparation work, and uses a variety of ways to explore and test, so as to ensure that the new system can meet the needs of future operations after it is put into use. Under the framework of "army operational test 21", the British Army Land Warfare Center began to plan the training transformation in 2020 and carried out the top-level design in advance. To ensure the steady progress of training transformation, the British army has taken a series of supporting measures. First, test the feasibility of the new system construction from the hardware aspect. In 2021, the British army launched the "virtual reality land combat training" program, organized the 1st Battalion of Duke of Lancaster regiment to carry out a one week virtual reality training, and practiced 81mm mortar firing and other subjects to master the difference between practical operation and virtual reality technology. Secondly, the adaptability of the new system is investigated through a single project. The British army launched the "Vulcan" program, with a single ground vehicle simulator to provide actual combat experience for drivers, shooters, commanders and other crew members. In the future, the new system will also build a universal platform for all arms. Thirdly, use the current mature system to improve the economy. The new system to be purchased by the British Army lists the equipped systems such as "single synthetic environment" and "joint fire synthetic platform" as important components to improve the interoperability with existing systems. The British Army believes that integrating the existing system into the new system can avoid repeated construction and reduce the waste of funds. Future oriented transformation The British Army attaches great importance to the construction of training system this time, mainly for the following three reasons. First, coordinate with the upgrading and transformation of the army. On the one hand, in recent years, the British army has successively introduced a number of transformation schemes, including the "future soldier" plan to improve the overall operational efficiency and the "man-machine team" plan for the construction of unmanned equipment. The overall goal is to build "a modern army with more sensitive actions, more integrated functions and stronger overseas influence". On the other hand, the army budget has been compressed and plans to cut 10000 personnel. By 2025, only more than 70000 personnel will be prepared. The British Army promotes the training transformation to help soldiers adapt to new equipment, get familiar with the coordinated operation of manned and unmanned equipment in advance, and adapt to the needs of new posts after the transformation. Second, aim at future battlefield needs. "The original training system is deeply affected by the old tactics, equipment and doctrine, and cannot cope with the changes in the future war," said Giles, head of the British Army's new system The new system to be purchased by the British army will not only continuously update the hardware equipment, but also more accurately predict the future battlefield conditions. Based on the previous war experience, the new system collects information from the perspectives of trainers, participants, exercise opponents, enemies and experts to simulate the future battlefield conditions to the greatest extent. Third, take the initiative in the competition among services. The British army will receive the new system as early as 2025, while the British Navy's "selbourne" and the air force's "Gladiator" training transformation plan are also in progress. According to the investigation of the British Ministry of defense, the training system of the three services has duplicate construction of functions and data. The general standards to be adopted in the future will determine the resources and voice of the various services in the training system. The British army has stepped up the procurement of new systems. While meeting the training objectives of its own service, it is also seeking the dominance of the joint training system.
