Ploughing the sea and treading the waves "lighters" teaching and educating "big gentlemen"

"What strength has supported you to work so hard all your life?" A young student chased him on his way from work. "A man is born with the benefit of his predecessors' knowledge. He is in debt to his predecessors, so he should have the awareness of paying off his debts and returning to the society. Besides, we are still scientific researchers. We should have a higher realm and selflessly devote ourselves like Madame Curie." He answered. The "he" being questioned is Wen Shengchang, a physical oceanographer, educator, a "lightlighter" of China's wave research and one of the founders of physical oceanography, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a professor of Ocean University of China. The earnest instruction is still in my ears, but my husband has left forever. On March 20, Wen Shengchang died in Qingdao, Shandong at the age of 101. Break the waves in the wind and go to the sea In November 1921, Wen Shengchang was born in Zhuanqiao Town, Guangshan County, Henan Province. He spent his middle school days in exile. He was deeply distressed by the country's poverty and national crisis, which also inspired his strong patriotism and ambition to save the country. Wen Shengchang graduated from Wuhan University in 1944. In 1946, he was sent to the American aviation machinery school for further study. Taking a boat from Shanghai to the United States, this is his first time to see the sea and personally feel the great power of the waves. He thought that if we can make use of these energy, it must be a very meaningful work. This accidental inspiration guided him to face the wind and waves and go to the sea on the way of his subsequent life. While studying in the United States, Wensheng often consulted marine materials and considered the methods of developing and utilizing wave energy in combination with the director of mechanical engineering. After returning home, Wen Shengchang came to Chongqing Southwest Polytechnic College to teach. In addition to teaching, he combined his knowledge of power machinery to design a simple power device using wave energy, and conducted experiments on the Bank of Jialing River, Beidaihe Beach and Huiquan Bay, Qingdao. Relying on the experiment, Wen Shengchang wrote a suggestion on the use of marine power, which was published in the Journal of mechanical engineering in 1953. So far, this is the earliest experiment of wave energy utilization conducted by Chinese scholars. In order to obtain real ocean experimental conditions, Wen Sheng often hopes to go to the seaside to study ocean waves. In October 1953, at the invitation of Professor He Chongben, the director of the Department of Oceanography of Shandong University (the predecessor of Ocean University of China) and a famous Chinese physical oceanographer, Wen Sheng often got his wish and entered the Department of Oceanography of Shandong University. Since then, Wen Shengchang has worked here for 69 years from Shandong University and Shandong Ocean University to Qingdao Ocean University and now China Ocean University. He has also written a chapter of his life here. The vast sea seeks help from the sea After working in Qingdao, Wensheng often devoted himself to marine science and education. Trapped in the backward economic environment at that time, the school was short of books, scientific research teams, instruments and equipment, and the unique instability, complexity and danger of marine scientific research made it difficult to carry out wave research. But Wensheng often withstood the pressure and emerged in the field of wave research. Starting from the wave spectrum, Wen Shengchang creatively put forward "general wind wave spectrum" and "surge spectrum", which had a strong response in the academic circles. Later, he derived the wind wave spectrum and direction spectrum, and put forward the construction standards suitable for the characteristics of China's sea areas in the technical specifications of port engineering. From the advent of "universal wind wave spectrum" and "surge spectrum", to the innovation of wave calculation and prediction methods suitable for the characteristics of China's sea areas, to the organization and implementation of national key scientific and technological projects in the seventh and eighth five year plan, and the proposal of a new hybrid wave numerical model... Wen Shengchang has made a series of major innovative achievements. While enriching China's wave research system and serving economic and social development, It also impressed scholars in western developed countries. Professor Liangming Niaoyu, a Japanese oceanographer, praised Wen Shengchang's research results as "the crystallization of the Oriental ideological system". His "wave theory" is the world's first monograph on wave theory. The "wave theory and calculation principle" co authored by him and his colleagues is known as a classic and has won the praise of "two of the world's five wave monographs". Wen Shengchang has made important contributions to the construction of marine disciplines and the development of the University. In 1984, he was appointed president of Shandong Ocean University. In 1993, he was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is also the first academician in the development history of Ocean University of China. Sir, the wind is high and the water is long Wen Shengchang spent most of his life teaching and educating people. Especially after arriving in Qingdao, he trained a large number of excellent marine talents for the country. He is a real "big gentleman". Among the students he trained, there are not only Professor Sun Fu, the first Chinese oceanographer to obtain a doctorate in China, but also Professor Wang Bin, the winner of Carl Gustav Rossby medal and professor of the University of Hawaii in the United States. In September 2000, the selection results of the He Liang He Li Ji gold award of that year were announced. Wen Shengchang won the science and progress award with a bonus of HK $200000. He donated 100000 yuan to Haida to set up a scholarship. The school suggested that it should be named after the sponsor, but Wensheng often refused, and finally named it "Wenyuan scholarship". In his decades of teaching career, Wensheng always kept in mind the mission of teaching and educating people, and became a teacher of conduct and knowledge deeply respected and loved by students. In view of this, the party and the government awarded him many honorary titles and awards, such as the national model worker of the national education system, the national "May Day Labor Medal" and the "lifelong dedication to the ocean" commemorative medal. In 2014, the annual meeting of Chinese educators and the grand ceremony of "China's good education" awarded him the "candle Award", which means that on the road of educating people, he is like a long burning red candle, reflecting the vast ocean and numerous students. "I have less and less time to work effectively for the party and the people. I should cherish the rest of my time and be determined to devote my life to the cause of the party and the people." This is the sonorous oath often written by Wen Sheng in his application for Party membership. It will also inspire and guide generations of marine people not to forget their original heart and set sail! (outlook new era)
