Chen Xu, permanent representative of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, made a joint statement on behalf of more than 40 countries at the 49th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on August 8, calling on the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for human rights to increase its input in economic, social and cultural rights and the right to development, promote partnership through constructive dialogue and cooperation, and oppose the use of human rights as a political tool. Covid-19 and Chen Xu expressed our appreciation for the work of the High Commissioner for human rights and the office of the High Commissioner for human rights in actively carrying out the work of coping with the impact of the new crown pneumonia epidemic on human rights. The epidemic has exposed that multilateral human rights institutions have been seriously under invested in economic, social and cultural rights and the right to development for a long time. We call on OHCHR to increase its investment in economic, social and cultural rights and the right to development, help countries, especially developing countries, overcome the challenges of the epidemic and achieve sustainable economic and social development, and actively provide human rights technical assistance on the basis of the consent of the countries concerned. Chen Xu expressed the hope that OHCHR will continue to perform its duties impartially and objectively, promote partnership through constructive dialogue and cooperation, respect the human rights development path independently selected by countries according to their national conditions, respect the authoritative information provided by governments, and oppose the use of human rights as a political tool.
