IMF president calls for collaboration to address three obstacles to global economic recovery

2022-02-07

Georgiyeva, President of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), called on countries to strengthen cooperation, enhance policy flexibility and jointly deal with the three major obstacles to global economic recovery. Georgi Ieva attended an online press conference the same day, said that the current global economic recovery is slowing down, facing three major obstacles, namely, COVID-19's continued inflation, rising inflation and high debt. She said that taking into account the large differences in inflation rates, debt levels and policy space among different countries, countries should adjust policies according to specific circumstances and enhance policy flexibility. She stressed that fighting the epidemic and improving the vaccination rate remain the top priority in the world. Georgieva pointed out that inflation has become a greater economic and social concern in many countries than a few months ago. The rise of inflation is affected by multiple factors such as supply chain interruption, strong commodity consumption demand and rising food prices. It remains to be seen how long it will last. She said that some central banks have hinted that they will withdraw from loose monetary policy and need to carefully grasp the balance between dealing with inflation and maintaining economic recovery. Georgiyeva warned that the tightening of monetary policy by the central banks of developed economies will have a spillover effect on emerging markets and developing economies, and those economies with high debt levels will be more affected. When asked by Xinhua news agency, olgiyeva said that it is not only conducive to China's own economic growth, but also necessary for China to adopt some monetary policies to support its own economic growth. Georgi Ieva said COVID-19 highlighted the interdependence of various countries' economies, and also explained the importance of strengthening international cooperation and policy coordination. She said that those who believe that economic globalization in the post epidemic era will be reversed are "overly pessimistic". The IMF released the update of the world economic outlook report last week. It is expected that the global economy will grow by 4.4% in 2022, down 0.5 percentage points from the forecast in October last year. (Xinhua News Agency)
