First of all, I would like to thank the organizers for their love for the Hong Kong University of science and technology and the Hong Kong University of science and Technology (Guangzhou). Because I learned that I was the first university president invited to give a keynote speech since the conference was held in 2018. At the same time, I think what is more important is that the common mission and vision have brought me and HKUST to the podium of the "global science and Technology Conference". There are two key words for this common mission and vision, one is "scientific and technological innovation" and the other is "Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Bay Area". CNBC "global science and Technology Conference" has been held since 2018. It is positioned to help Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Bay become a global science and technology innovation center. Since its founding in 1991, "scientific and technological innovation" has always been our gene and soul. The 30-year development process is deeply rooted in the "Great Bay area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao". HKUST has made remarkable achievements in education, scientific research and knowledge transfer, and quickly ranks among the world's first-class universities. Now, in Nansha, Guangzhou, the geographical center of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, the Hong Kong University of science and Technology (Guangzhou) is under intensive construction and is expected to officially open in September next year (2022). HKUST and HKUST (Guangzhou) will jointly constitute "Hong Kong University of science and Technology 2.0". The world is experiencing a new scientific and technological revolution, and disruptive technologies emerge every year, such as quantum information science, AI, advanced communication and so on. The new scientific and technological revolution gave birth to the fourth industrial revolution, and the demand for talents has changed qualitatively. The current teaching mode is difficult to cultivate talents who face the future and lead the future industry. The two fundamental questions of education are: what kind of people should be trained? How to cultivate people? The answer of "Hong Kong University of science and Technology 2.0" is to cultivate cutting-edge talents who are oriented to the future and adapt to the future development of science and technology industry and society; Cultivate leading talents with creative thinking, innovation ability and new knowledge transformation ability. So, how to cultivate such talents? Our reform is carried out in three aspects: First, innovate the academic structure and promote the development of integrated disciplines. Nowadays, the traditional division of disciplines can not adapt to the development of science, technology and knowledge. Based on the profound traditional disciplines of HKUST, HKUST (Guangzhou) will establish a new academic framework based on "hub" and "thrust", and develop interdisciplinary, emerging and cutting-edge disciplines. Under the framework of "HKUST 2.0", all disciplines of HKUST and HKUST (Guangzhou) do not overlap and complement each other. With rich soil and the nutrition of multi-disciplinary integration, HKUST has bred a towering academic tree. Second, promote teaching innovation and scientific research innovation, and cultivate students to learn to "ask valuable questions". The birth of new scientific research achievements and new technologies incubates new industries. As the engine of innovation, universities establish the technological first mover advantage of new industries, formulate industry standards for new industries, and develop new business models. More importantly, looking at the world, the Great Bay area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao integrates the favorable elements of "favorable time, place and people", which provides an excellent soil and environment for "HKUST 2.0" to promote the reform of higher education paradigm and cultivate innovative talents. After more than 40 years of reform and opening up in China, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Dawan district has a complete industrial chain. Governments at all levels have increased their support for innovation and entrepreneurship year by year. An innovation atmosphere of trial first, forge ahead, openness and inclusiveness has been formed in the region, so it has attracted talents, funds and other elements all over the world.
