You haven't used 5g yet, but the 6G battle has begun

2021-12-01

Pushed forward by time, in addition to ourselves, there are technology evolution that can not be stopped. Among many technologies, communication, like a top student, is unique with its stable and special evolution cycle. There has always been a conventional law in the communication industry, that is, "commercial generation, R & D generation". In other words, in 2019, the industry should start relevant research. Therefore, although we are just used to living with 5g and haven't even looked forward to its "killer" application, 6G has become an arrow on the string and is ready to go in another timetable. At present, according to the general prediction of academia and industry, whether 5g development can meet the expectation or not, 6G will be put into use all over the world by 2030. Recently, with the accelerated layout and progress of countries on 6G, we have seen some interesting phenomena. Who is defining 6G Like other technologies, how to scientifically define 6G is the first problem to be solved in the early stage of research. Neil McRae, chief network architect of British Telecom Group (BT), was the first to publicly put forward the concept of 6G. He believes that 6G is "5g + satellite network". Through satellite, 5g signals can achieve global coverage without base station, so as to realize cheaper and faster Internet connection and truly make the global network a whole. In short, if "5g" opens up the "interconnection of all things" in the plane world, then "6G" will soon create a "smart alliance of all things" in the three-dimensional world. However, so far, the global industry has not formed a broad consensus on the definition of 6G. 3GPP 6G technology pre research and international standardization are expected to start after 2025. The only certainty is that the data transmission rate of 6G may reach 50 times that of 5g, and the delay can be shortened to one tenth of 5g. In addition, the communication industry generally believes that in the next decade, human life will show a wide deployment of intelligent devices, which can make optimal decisions with minimal human intervention. Based on this judgment, some experts pointed out that almost all 6G papers believe that AI will become an indispensable part of 6G, thus forming "ubiquitous intelligence". In terms of speed, 6G may support a huge data rate - about 1TB per second. Especially when deployed with AI, it is expected to achieve great improvements in touch control, imaging and position perception. In terms of application scenarios, some studies have pointed out that in the future, 6G services will show new development trends such as immersion, intelligence and global coverage, forming eight business applications such as immersive cloud XR, holographic communication, sensory interconnection, intelligent interaction, communication perception, Pratt Whitney intelligence, digital twin and global coverage. It is worth mentioning that since 6G is still in the early design stage, no one can fully determine the requirements of 6G in terms of physical infrastructure. This means that it is unclear how the equipment needs to be reconfigured to adapt to the new technology. For example, 6G may allow object tracking using high-precision sensors and achieve more accurate visual and speech recognition. Some experts also said that the existing mobile phones and the mobile phones evolved from them in the next few years may not be enough to carry the cutting-edge functions that 6G will provide, which may lead to a thorough reform of the manufacturing and use of mobile phones. It can not be ignored that the 6G era will also increase the consciousness space, further expand the communication space, and reshape the world through the intelligent interaction between the virtual world and the physical world. Suddenly lively 6g It is not difficult to see that as the next generation mobile communication technology, the change brought by 6G is unimaginable. At the same time, after western countries lost their leading edge in 5g, 6G was also seen by them as an opportunity to regain the initiative again. In this context, countries are scrambling to make plans, spend a lot of money and form alliances. In the near future, the heat has reached a small climax. On November 16, the US 6G alliance "next g alliance" held its first meeting. The goal of the alliance is to promote "North America's global leadership in 5g evolution path and 6G early development". It is reported that at present, 27 manufacturers around the world have joined the alliance and become founding members, almost including European and American industrial giants in the field of communication and technology. American companies include apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Qualcomm, Intel, Cisco, HP, at & T and Verizon, European companies include Ericsson and Nokia, and Korean companies include Samsung and LG. We see that in addition to traditional communication manufacturers, American Internet companies have become a new force to participate, and they will mainly undertake R & D at the software application level. At the same time, we need to recognize that the United States has an advantage in the field of satellites to a certain extent. For example, the United States has the largest number of space satellites, seizing the satellite position, frequency and orbit position in the field of 6G communication in advance, and various technology giants have invested heavily in satellite launch. In fact, as early as 2020, the United States has called on global semiconductor giants such as apple, Qualcomm, Intel and Samsung to jointly develop 6G. After entering 2021, it has been more active. For example, it has contacted Japan and South Korea successively. Now Japan has decided to jointly develop 6G with the United States, and South Korea is also discussing this matter with the United States. It is understood that the United States has also spent billions of dollars to sign 6G related cooperation with South Korea. It should be noted that among the allies of the United States, there is not only seemingly harmonious cooperation, but almost every manufacturer also has its own wishful thinking. Also in November, the South Korean government announced its latest progress in the 6G field. It is reported that the South Korean government is implementing the plan on 6G network, and will invest 220 billion won to develop 6G communication industry and compete for the dominance of the global 6G market. South Korea predicts that South Korea's 6G network is expected to realize the first 6G commercialization in the next seven years. It is not difficult to understand that South Korea is so radical. You know, in the 5g era, South Korea is the first country in the world to announce the launch of 5g commercial, taking the lead in setting off the 5g curtain. When the time comes, South Korea naturally doesn't want to lose its initiative in 6G. In order to occupy a leading position in the international market and master the 6G core original communication technology, the Korean government not only spends a huge amount of money on low orbit communication satellites, ultra precision network technology and other fields, but also cooperates with Finland, the United States, China and other countries in R & D cooperation. Since this year, the European Union has also launched the 6G research project hexa-x, and organized all parties of industry, University and research to make technical preparations for the launch of the 6G network around 2030. Recently, Germany announced to fund the establishment of four 6G research centers, and plans to invest 700 million euros in the next five years to fund the research and development of 6G technology, etc. It is reported that LG recently started the 6G network test in Germany. During the test, the data was sent and received within a distance of 100 meters. On a 6G network, it takes only 51 seconds to download 6GB movies at a speed of 1000 megabytes per second. Japan has also started a positive layout. On the one hand, it has formulated a b5g development roadmap, and on the other hand, it has cooperated with the United States to invest US $4.5 billion in b5g / 6G technology research and development. Specifically, in China, according to public information, as early as March 2018, Miao Wei, Minister of industry and information technology, disclosed that China had begun to study 6G. By 2019, the national 6G technology R & D promotion working group and overall expert group will be officially established. Similarly, on November 16, in the relevant development plan released by the Ministry of industry and information technology, it proposed to build 6G vision, typical application scenarios and key capability index system, and encouraged enterprises to carry out in-depth research on 6G potential technologies. Unlike other countries, China has the world's largest 5g network and the largest number of 5g users. In the process of smooth transition from 5g to 6G, we have natural network and industrial advantages. Most importantly, it is said that first-class enterprises set standards. Although it has not yet reached the stage of formulating 6G standards, according to the latest data, we have achieved a leading level in the number of 6G patents, and patents are one of the important cornerstones of the standards. Who is a clown? Among the countries with 6G layout, there is such a special case, which is India. Public information shows that India established the Ministry of Telecommunications (DOT) a month ago, established a technology innovation group to focus on 6G technology, and appointed K Rajaraman, the country's telecommunications secretary, as the chairman of the technology innovation group. The team consists of 22 technical members who will develop a roadmap for the R & D of 6G technology. In addition, the group will also promote standardization, application and product development. If you say, all this is still reasonable. The news that will be released next is somewhat surprising. A few days ago, India put forward an ambitious plan, that is, to obtain the independently developed 6G technology by the end of 2023 or 2024. This means that when it is launched two or three years later than other countries, India will complete a series of work of 6G within two years, six or seven years faster than the global 6G business schedule. A more cruel fact is that up to now, India has not officially commercial 5g network. According to the plan, it will conduct spectrum auction in the second quarter of 2022 and complete the core development of 5g technology independently developed in the third quarter. However, as we know, 6G will make a transition from the interconnection of all things to the intelligent alliance of all things on the basis of 5g. The successful commercial use of 5g, especially its wide application in the field of vertical industry, will lay a good foundation for the development of 6G. Of course, perhaps we shouldn't be too biased about India's "ambition", because India once stressed that it wanted to launch its own 6G. As for whether this "6G" is consistent with what mainstream countries think, we still need to draw a question mark. After all, it still has some experience in "domestic communication technology". For example, last year, India announced that it had successfully developed domestic 5g technology and would ship it to the world. As soon as the news came out, it attracted extensive attention all over the world. However, just ten days after the announcement of "domestic 5g", it was said that the core components of India's so-called "domestic 5g" were mainly purchased by Nokia and Ericsson, and India did not have core technology. So we have to worry about whether this familiar scene will be repeated on 6G. Different from the doubts of other countries, India is optimistic about 6G. The Indian Ministry of telecommunications said that India should take the lead in 6G space. More Indian media reported: "consistent with the situation of the United States, Japan and China in 6G technology, India has claimed and assumed a leading role, because this technology is expected to completely change communication, data, telephone, health services and mainly affect the military, which is not just a technological leap." Whether India can launch 6G in two or three years now seems that the answer is not far away. Write at the end Communication technology has always been a must for big countries. From the current pattern, we have achieved 5g leadership successively. Although we have obtained convenience in 6G technology, we have also fallen into passivity in global cooperation. From the perspective of industry, 6G has to face the complex macro environment since the research stage. As Xu Zhijun said, after more than 40 years of development from 1g to 5g, the mobile communication industry has been relatively mature and is no longer a fast-growing industry. The scale effect of deepening cooperation is more important than ever before, but geopolitical turmoil and going global
