Discovery of Miaodigou Phase II Cultural House Site at Jiazhai Site in Shanxi Province

2025-05-13

On the 12th, Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology released the excavation data of Jiazhai Site in Yangcheng, Shanxi. The site discovered the site of the second phase cultural house in Miaodigou, and unearthed relics such as ring foot cups and jade rings. This is the first direct evidence of the exchange and interaction between the middle and late Dawenkou Culture and the second phase of Miaodigou Culture in southeastern Shanxi. The Jiazhai Site is located in Jiazhai Village, Qinchi Town, Yangcheng County, Jincheng City, Shanxi Province. It faces the Reed River to the south and has a terrain that is high in the north and low in the south. The West River, a tributary of the Reed River, passes through the village and divides the entire site into two parts, east and west, which is actually the same site. From March to May 2021, Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology and Yangcheng County Museum jointly conducted a survey of the site. The distribution range of the Jiazhai Village West Site is about 300 meters from east to west and about 100 meters from north to south. Cultural layers, ash pits, and trenches have been found on the cliffs facing the river in the southern part of the site. Under the guidance of clues provided by local residents, the archaeological team cleared a large house site from the second phase of the Miaodigou culture in the north of the water diversion canal. The existing living room plan of the site is a rounded rectangle, with a length of 7.2 meters from east to west and a width of 3.5 to 5.4 meters from north to south. The remaining wall height is nearly 20 centimeters. A gray white pottery ring foot cup was unearthed in the southwest corner of the house site. Similar shapes have been found at the Jiaojia site in Zhangqiu, Dawenkou cultural distribution area, and the Jinzhai site in Xiaoxian, northern Anhui. This type of ring foot cup dates back about 4700 years ago. Archaeologists believe that the house site F1 discovered during the investigation of the Jiazhai site has a basically complete structure and is currently the largest house site discovered in the middle reaches of the Qinhe River and the southern Taihang region during the Miaodigou Phase II culture period. Combining archaeological discoveries in southeastern and southwestern Shanxi, it is shown that the Qinhe River Basin and the southern Taihang region are the hub of cultural exchange between the Dawenkou Longshan culture in the East and the southwestern Shanxi, and even the northwestern Shanxi Shaanxi region. This discovery provides a new perspective for understanding the driving forces and mechanisms of civilization evolution in the Central Plains region. (New Society)
