Hong Kong holds seminar to explore accelerating global shipping green transformation
2025-04-17
Several domestic and foreign aviation industry professionals expressed at a special seminar held in Hong Kong on the 16th that in the face of international geopolitical risks and tariff headwinds, the industry should work together to accelerate the achievement of net zero emissions targets. This seminar is hosted by the Hong Kong Shipowners Association, bringing together over 200 shipowners, shipping industry experts, and practitioners to explore how to promote decarbonization and sustainable development in shipping, and leverage Hong Kong's unique advantages and platform role to complement the deliberations of the 83rd session of the International Maritime Organization's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC83) held in London last week. Liao Zhenxin, Deputy Director of the Transport and Logistics Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, pointed out in his keynote speech that the net zero emissions framework passed by the International Maritime Organization last week will have a significant impact on the international shipping industry. Last year, Hong Kong took the initiative to support the International Maritime Organization's green shipping policies related to carbon intensity rating, and further moved towards developing into a green marine fuel refueling and trading center, looking forward to strengthening cooperation with industry partners. Chen Peishan, Managing Director of the Hong Kong Shipowners' Association, said that both the 2024 Policy Address and the "Action Plan for Green Marine Fuel Refueling" announced by the SAR government in November last year clearly stated the goal of "building a green shipping corridor", which has aroused widespread expectations. The Hong Kong Shipowners' Association will continue to make positive contributions to the transformation and sustainable development of the shipping industry in Hong Kong, the country, and globally. On April 11th, the International Maritime Organization announced the approval of the draft amendment to Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, which enforces the net zero emissions framework of the International Maritime Organization. This is the world's first framework that combines mandatory emission restrictions and greenhouse gas pricing across the entire industry sector. (New Society)
