Unmanned express delivery vehicles help rural logistics connect the 'last mile'

2025-03-17

In early spring, at the rural delivery logistics distribution center in Chongyang County, Xianning City, Hubei Province, the automatic sorting system is running rapidly. Express packages sent to Quanbei Village and Jinbu Village in Xiaoling Township, more than 30 kilometers away, are being loaded one by one into the carriages of unmanned express delivery vehicles by staff. Before each delivery service starts, the staff will set up the driving route for the unmanned express delivery vehicle according to the delivery plan. The vehicle will carry out the delivery service according to the customized route, drive at the preset safe speed, and comply with traffic rules. The reporter saw that the unmanned express delivery vehicle is equipped with cameras and radar on its body. It will automatically stop at traffic lights and can also avoid obstacles and yield to pedestrians in a timely manner. In less than an hour, the unmanned express delivery vehicle safely arrived at the rural logistics point in Quanpi Village, Xiaoling Township. As soon as the unmanned express delivery vehicle set off, it automatically called me to tell me the approximate arrival time. After arriving, I scanned the code and opened the carriage to unload the goods. After the line was opened, the volume of express delivery at my point continued to increase Chen Hui, the person in charge of the rural delivery logistics comprehensive service point in Quanpi Village, said. At first, everyone thought it was strange, but now they're used to it and picking up packages is much faster than before Li Yan, a villager from Quanpi Village who came to pick up the express delivery, said. After Chen Hui scanned the code and closed the carriage, the unmanned express delivery vehicle continued to the Jinbu Village logistics point. Chongyang County, located at the junction of Hunan, Hubei, and Jiangxi provinces, is surrounded by mountains and peaks on all sides, making transportation inconvenient. The "last mile" logistics delivery has low efficiency and high cost. In recent years, Chongyang County has integrated various funds of 1.5 billion yuan for rural road construction, and the total length of rural roads in the county has reached more than 2700 kilometers. With the densification of urban and rural road networks, improvement of road conditions, and increased coverage of 5G networks, the use of unmanned express vehicles has laid the foundation for reducing transportation costs and improving logistics efficiency. In September last year, Chongyang County Transportation and Logistics Development Center guided Hubei Chuangxuan Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. to introduce two unmanned express delivery vehicles and jointly launched a pilot project of "vehicle road cloud integration" with technology enterprises, achieving unmanned and precise delivery of express delivery. The introduction of unmanned express delivery vehicles into the rural market has effectively reduced the delivery costs for enterprises. Each unmanned express delivery vehicle has a monthly system usage fee of about 2000 yuan, which can complete the work of 2 drivers and 2 ordinary express delivery vehicles, saving an average of about 10000 yuan in monthly costs, "said Cheng Quan, General Manager of the Sorting Center of Hubei Chuangxuan Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. At present, there are six unmanned express delivery vehicles in the county that have entered towns and villages for self-service delivery. Three routes have been opened, covering about 20000 people in eight administrative villages, delivering more than 1600 items per day, and connecting the 'last mile' of rural logistics transportation Zhou Haijun, director of the Chongyang County Transportation and Logistics Development Center, said, "According to the wishes of the enterprise, the next step will be to continue promoting unmanned express delivery vehicles. As soon as the conditions are ripe, a new line will be opened." In recent years, Chongyang has integrated express delivery companies in the county, implemented intensive operations, and formed a community of integrated development of passenger, freight, and postal services with Hubei Chuangxuan Supply Chain Management Co., Ltd. and Chongyang County Passenger Transport Station, promoting effective connection of rural passenger transportation, freight logistics, postal express delivery and other services, and reducing logistics costs. It is reported that the cost of express delivery in remote villages has decreased from 0.8 yuan per item in the past to 0.2 yuan per item currently, and the delivery time has significantly improved. We will continue to improve the two-way distribution system of rural postal logistics at the county, township, and village levels, strive to achieve smooth flow of goods, and support rural revitalization Xia Wenqiang, Deputy County Mayor of Chongyang County, said.
