How to find the right positioning for the communication industry in the AI era
2025-03-12
Although the 2025 Mobile World Congress (MWC2025) has come to an end, the thoughts and debates it has sparked are still ongoing. As the most influential exhibition in the global communication field, the Mobile World Congress, also known as the "Barcelona Exhibition" in the industry due to its location in Barcelona, Spain, has always been regarded as a barometer of the industry. In this year's Bazhan, it is not the communication technologies such as 6G, satellite communication and millimeter wave that occupy the "C" position, but artificial intelligence, so that the media roast that it was "lost by AI". In fact, this is not a phenomenon unique to Bazhan. In the past year, artificial intelligence has become a hot topic in almost all exhibitions and forums. From consumer electronics exhibitions such as CES (Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, USA) to car shows of all sizes; From high-end forums like Davos to professional conferences in various industries, artificial intelligence is an unavoidable topic. As early as a year ago, Zheng Nanning, an academician of the CAE Member, made a judgment on this: "Artificial intelligence technology is changing the world at an astonishing speed, and every field of human society is revitalized by it". It is worth noting that the development speed of artificial intelligence technology itself is also unexpected. In particular, the open-source model released by the domestic big model DeepSeek has shifted the technological route of artificial intelligence from relying solely on stacked computing power to more efficient computing power optimization, making model size no longer the only factor determining AI intelligence level. This change also makes AI technology universal. How can the communication industry find its own era positioning in the face of the surging AI wave? Firstly, it should be a good foundation. For artificial intelligence technology, communication technology and products are equivalent to infrastructure, providing a guarantee for computing power and data flow. At present, 5G-A and F5G-A technologies support the collaborative scheduling of computing power between the cloud and edge through their high bandwidth, high speed, and low latency characteristics, enabling AI applications to break through local computing power limitations. For example, large models rely on high bandwidth communication networks to complete massive data collection and transmission, promoting the migration of AI from model training to end-to-end applications, while robot collaboration in intelligent manufacturing relies on 5G networks to achieve millisecond level communication, providing necessary conditions for AI driven industrial automation. At the same time, the wide area coverage capability of communication technology extends AI application scenarios from closed environments to fields such as smart cities and remote healthcare. Through the combination of 5G and AI, real-time data interaction and precise control can be achieved in scenarios such as surgical robots and environmental monitoring. Secondly, it is about 'using good tools'. Due to the obvious effect of artificial intelligence technology in promoting the intelligent upgrading of the communication industry, it is urgent for the communication industry to make good use of AI as a tool. In recent years, artificial intelligence technology has been successfully applied in dynamic optimization of network resources, innovation of communication network operation and maintenance, and innovation of communication industry service models. For example, neural networks based on deep learning can achieve deep mining of core network devices and base station data, improving network response efficiency; The integration of AI and communication has given rise to new business models such as intelligent customer service and personalized network services. More importantly, 'integrated innovation' is achieved through the path of 'industry digitization'. Currently, due to the integration of advanced communication technologies such as 5G and 5G-A with AI, the digital transformation process of thousands of industries is accelerating. This process will not only enhance the productivity of various industries, but also create broader value. As Zhu Minghao, Executive Director of the China High end Manufacturing Research Center at Beijing Jiaotong University, said, artificial intelligence technology is highly likely to become a fundamental discipline technology like physics and mathematics, reshaping the physical and virtual spaces of social development. The digitization of industries is strengthening the interaction between AI and the physical world, which will make significant contributions to the cutting-edge exploration and future evolution of artificial intelligence. The value it creates may lead to the rise of Chinese industry in a new dimension. (New Society)
