2025-03-04

Recently, 10 major archaeological discoveries for the year 2024 were announced in Zhejiang, including the Xianju Xiatang Site, Quzhou Huangchao Dun Site, Qingyuan Xiaoxiong Mountain Site, Yunhe Xiansheng Bay Site, Ningbo Zhenhai Wenxi Site, Hangzhou Xiaoshan Lugongqiao Site, Shaoxing Jizhong Site, Huzhou Wuxing Sanwan Kiln Site Group, Hangzhou Lin'an Yijin City Wall Site, and Jiaxing Dongta Temple Site. The Xiatang Site is located in Xiatang Village, Hengxi Town, Xianju County, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is a Neolithic village site dating back nearly 10000 years. The site was selected as a "New Archaeological Discovery of China in 2024" due to its presentation of the early rice farming society in China. Zhong Zhaobing, a research curator at the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the project leader of the Xiatang archaeological site, introduced that the cumulative archaeological excavation area has reached 2250 square meters, and relics such as trenches, artificial earthen platforms, artifact pits, house sites, food processing sites, braised clay "squares", and ditches have been discovered. More than 400 relics from the Shangshan Culture period have been unearthed, presenting a preliminary picture of the ancient village of Xiatang dating back thousands of years. The Xiatang Site spans the entire Neolithic period and is a microcosm of early Chinese villages, and it has been well preserved, which is truly rare Zhong Zhaobing stated that in the next step, the team will follow the "Archaeology of China" project plan and use multidisciplinary technical means to unveil the mysterious veil of "soup under ten thousand years". The Quzhou Huangchao Dun Site is located in Lianhua Town, Qujiang District, Quzhou City. It is a settlement site dating back to the early to mid Neolithic period, approximately 9300-8000 years ago. Zhang Sen, the head of the Zhejiang Western Archaeology Workstation at the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, introduced that during excavation, a suspected "moat" moat and a low-lying area with a total area of 15000 square meters were discovered. After testing, we found that the silicon content of rice plants in the soil reached 5000 to 7000 grains per gram, with a very high density. It can be considered that this is the land where the ancestors once planted rice, "Zhang Sen said. It is understood that the Huangchao Dun Site provides important materials for studying the site selection, settlement landscape, and social structure of the Shangshan Cultural Site. As one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization, Zhejiang has world cultural heritage sites such as West Lake, the Grand Canal, and the Liangzhu Ancient City ruins. Chen Guangsheng, Secretary of the Party Group and Director of the Department of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism of Zhejiang Province, recently stated that the province will focus on promoting the Zhejiang Archaeological "Rising Stars" Plan, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Torch Action, and the Cultural Gene Activation Project in the inheritance and protection of cultural heritage. According to the "Implementation Plan for Zhejiang Archaeological 'Rising Stars' Plan (2025-2030)" recently issued by the Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, Zhejiang will implement six major projects in the next six years, focusing on building the Zhejiang symbol of Chinese civilization, establishing national key archaeological institutions, and constructing an international dissemination system for Zhejiang archaeology. In terms of deepening the cultural gene activation project, in 2024, Zhejiang implemented the "Wenlan Chongguang" integrated book and pavilion project, which uses digital technology to achieve the convergence of the Wenlan Pavilion edition "Siku Quanshu" and the Wenlan Pavilion across time and space. In the future, Zhejiang will launch more new projects and scenarios to empower the high-quality development of cultural and tourism industries with the source of cultural genes, and embark on a path of revitalizing ancient charm with Zhejiang characteristics Chen Guangsheng said.
