China is an ancient civilization with a long history. In the long river of history, it has not only formed a vast Central Plains hinterland, also a vast frontier region. General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out when presiding over the 18th collective study of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Party of China, "We should strengthen the multi-disciplinary research related to the history of the frontier and the governance of the frontier, and accelerate the construction of the system of the frontier studies with Chinese characteristics." To construct the knowledge system of the frontier studies with Chinese characteristics, the study of the history of the Chinese frontier should play fundamental role.

The formation and evolution of Chinese frontier history research
Mr. Ma Dazheng, a frontier historian, summarized the of the climax of Chinese frontier research since modern times into three stages. In the late Qing Dynasty, the aggression of imperialism led to the full-scale outbreak of China's crisis, and frontier issues became key issues related to the survival of the nation. Against this background, the rise of the "Northwest History and Geography School" triggered first climax of Chinese frontier research.
The establishment of the Chinese Geographical Society in 1909 became a turning point for Chinese frontier research to develop from tradition modernity. Various frontier academic societies, academic journals of frontier research, and a large number of works emerged, and specialized departments of frontier studies were established in universities, promoted the rapid development of Chinese frontier research. By the 1930s and 1940s, under the influence of the national anti-J war and the movement to save the nation, the second climax of Chinese frontier research came with the proposal of "frontier administration studies", which directly promoted the professional and development of Chinese frontier research.
In 1983, the establishment of the Chinese Center for Frontier History and Geography Research of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the establishment of the three major research series of the history of ancient Chinese frontiers, the history of modern Chinese boundary changes, and the history of Chinese frontier research in following period, marked a new stage of Chinese frontier research and the third climax. The founding of professional journals of Chinese frontier history research, the publication of the "Front History and Geography Series", the development of academic exchanges on frontier research at home and abroad, and the independent establishment of the "Chinese Frontier Studies" secondary discipline in universities have promoted the flourishing of Chinese frontier history research.
