Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao join hands to promote high-quality education development in the Greater Bay Area
2025-01-07
The Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area is taking talent cultivation and education cooperation as one of the core engines of development, sharing high-quality courses, jointly cultivating talents, building joint laboratories, integrating education, technology, and talent development, and jointly writing a chapter in building an education powerhouse in the Bay Area. On December 9, 2024, the new campus of the University of Macau's Hengqin Guangdong Macao Deep Cooperation Zone began construction and is expected to be put into use in 2028. Ten years ago, the faculty and students of the University of Macau moved from the Taipa campus, which covers only 0.05 square kilometers, to the Hengqin campus, expanding its area to 1.09 square kilometers. At present, the University of Macau has three State Key Laboratory with about 13500 students. Against the backdrop of education cooperation in the Greater Bay Area, the University of Macau has taken the lead in extending its independent mode of education. On October 14, 2024, the Hong Kong Institute of Advanced Studies at Sun Yat sen University was officially inaugurated in the Hong Kong Science Park adjacent to the waterfront of Pak Shek Kok. This is a comprehensive research institution established by mainland Chinese universities in Hong Kong. Sun Yat sen University has also signed a series of cooperation agreements with Hong Kong universities such as the University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in fields such as medicine, medical engineering, energy technology, and biology. In recent years, many universities in Hong Kong and Macau have taken the lead in establishing branch campuses or cooperative educational institutions in the Greater Bay Area, such as the Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen), the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), and the City University of Hong Kong (Dongguan); Mainland universities such as Shenzhen University and Sun Yat sen University have also established research institutions in Hong Kong and Macau. The two-way travel between mainland China and Hong Kong and Macao provides a new opportunity for China's higher education to break through the bottleneck of resources and talents in the past. Emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet of Things are driving the transformation of education methods. The Greater Bay Area is exploring innovative, open, and shared educational models, establishing an online open course alliance for universities in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. The alliance brings together over 7700 high-quality courses that are open and shared among universities in the Greater Bay Area. Lin Rupeng, Director of the Education Department of Guangdong Province, said that it is necessary to deepen the development of education cooperation in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, support Guangdong universities to establish teaching and research institutions in Hong Kong and Macao, and increase the joint efforts of Guangdong Hong Kong Macao universities to carry out graduate training and major scientific and technological breakthroughs. In addition to higher education, cooperation in the field of basic education in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area is also deepening. On November 9, 2024, the Hengqin School affiliated with Haojiang Middle School, located in the Hengqin Guangdong Macao Deep Cooperation Zone, was officially completed and put into use. It is reported that Haojiang Middle School Affiliated Hengqin School is a supporting education project of "New Neighborhood in Macau" and also the first school for Australian children in mainland China. The "Macau New Neighborhood" project is the first comprehensive livelihood project jointly developed by Guangdong and Macau in the cooperation zone for Macau residents. The project integrates high-quality living space, education, health, and social services. Ouyang Yu, Director of the Department of Social and Cultural Affairs of the Macao SAR Government, stated that the establishment of Hengqin School affiliated with Haojiang Middle School not only has the characteristics of the Macao curriculum, but also the Macao students on campus enjoy similar treatment as free education in Macao. The Macao SAR government will continue to closely cooperate with the Executive Committee of the Cooperation Zone in the future, continuously optimize the livelihood supporting services of the "Macao New Neighborhood" project, continue to support schools in carrying out secondary school building construction, create a "one-stop" education service from kindergarten to high school, and provide more convenient conditions for Macao residents to study in the Cooperation Zone. At present, Guangdong has 12 schools for Hong Kong and Macao children, including schools for Australian children, and encourages more than 30 schools with conditions to open classes for Hong Kong and Macao children. Since 2004, Guangdong has organized the establishment of sister schools in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao every year. So far, 1546 pairs have been established, accounting for over half of the total number of schools in mainland China. Not long ago, the first batch of "Hong Kong Navigation Teacher and Principal Training Program" students visited Zhongxing Primary School in Yuexiu District, Guangzhou for a one week on-the-job learning. The "Hong Kong Pilot Teacher and Principal Training Program" is the first long-term training program for teachers and principals implemented by Hong Kong in mainland China. The plan aims to discover and cultivate teachers and principals who have firm professional beliefs and missions, are willing to continuously learn new teaching knowledge, actively explore innovative strategies, and have excellent potential. A total of 50 students participated in the first phase of the program, all of whom were frontline teachers and principals from primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. I am deeply moved by the children's love for learning here Principal Wen Shiyong of Po Leung Kuk Lam Man Chan English Primary School in Hong Kong expressed the hope that Chung Sing Primary School can select a group of outstanding primary school students to read Chinese textbooks and make them available as cloud resources for sharing; Hong Kong children can also read English textbooks aloud to mainland children. This kind of language resource with vivid emotions is beneficial for Hong Kong children to better grasp textbook knowledge and learn Mandarin well, and also helps mainland children improve their English proficiency, complementing each other. With the continuous deepening of sharing and communication, education in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area is gradually moving towards deep integration. A beautiful picture of educational resource sharing, collaborative talent cultivation, and cultural inheritance and innovation is slowly unfolding in the Greater Bay Area, injecting a continuous stream of educational momentum into its vigorous development and steadily moving towards the goal of building a world-class bay area education highland.
