200 footprints! UK discovers the largest dinosaur footprint site in the country

2025-01-06

People have discovered the largest dinosaur footprint site in Oxfordshire, England, at a quarry, with about 200 dinosaur footprints formed in the mid Jurassic period about 166 million years ago, reminiscent of ancient dinosaurs walking step by step on this surface. This site is located at the Dewars Quarry in Oxfordshire. According to Reuters on the 2nd, worker Gary Johnson noticed an unusual bump on the ground while operating an excavator to clear the land, so he reported it. Hundreds of researchers from the University of Oxford and the University of Birmingham in the UK went to this place in June 2024 and finally made the "exciting" discovery mentioned above. Researchers said on the 2nd that there are a total of five dinosaur footprints at this site, with the longest one stretching over 150 meters. Four of them were left behind by sauropod dinosaurs, which were huge bodied, long necked herbivores such as whalebosaurus, with a body length of up to 18 meters. The fifth footprint comes from Megalosaurus, a large carnivorous theropod dinosaur with a body length of 9 meters. One major feature is that it has three toes on its front and back limbs and sharp claws. AFP quoted Emma Nichols, a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum of Oxford University, as saying, "It is very rare to find so many dinosaur footprints in one place, and it is also very rare to find footprints that stretch for so long." She said that this is likely the largest dinosaur footprint site ever discovered in the world. Duncan Murdoch, who also works at the museum, said in a video screenshot, "It's so exciting to know that a certain dinosaur once walked on this surface and left behind this footprint... You can imagine it pulling its feet out of the mud while walking." Richard Butler, a paleontologist at the University of Birmingham, said that the dinosaur footprint is so well preserved, and the reason may include weather factors. We don't know for sure... but it may have been a storm that caused a large amount of sediment to deposit on dinosaur footprints, which means the footprints were preserved rather than washed away. Researchers also found that the footprints left by these carnivorous and herbivorous dinosaurs intersected, which makes people curious about whether and how these two types of dinosaurs interacted. Researchers took 20000 photos of these footprints and created detailed 3D models using drone aerial photography technology. They hope that this discovery can provide clues for studying the interaction, body size, and movement speed of dinosaurs. According to Agence France Presse, archaeologists discovered 40 sets of dinosaur footprints in the area in 1997, some of which stretched 180 meters. Megalosaurus, also known as Spotted Dragon, was the first dinosaur to be scientifically described and named. This also sparked public interest in dinosaurs for about 200 years. Nichols said, "Scientists have known and studied Megalosaurs for a longer time than any other dinosaur on Earth. Recent discoveries suggest that there is still new evidence about these animals waiting for people to discover
