From 'cherishing words like gold' to 'expanding communication'

The exaggerated, emotional, and dramatic expressions that have emerged in online language recently have been jokingly referred to by netizens as "call inflation". From the emergence of various emojis, to the popularity of internet abbreviations, to the endless stream of hot and bad memes, internet language has always been a hot topic of concern and discussion for people. As a popular internet meme, "call inflation" cannot be separated from an online video titled "On Today's Call Inflation" two years ago. In the video, the blogger borrowed the cartoon images of Lu Xun and Li Dazhao, and roast about the fact that in the process of Internet language expression, the "face value" of expression is increasing, but the expression itself is increasingly scarce. Behind it, the mismatch between the "signifier" and "signified" of language, as well as the phenomenon of constantly raising emotional thresholds, have caused many netizens to ponder. Is' call inflation 'a true proposition? I'm afraid there's some truth to it. As of June 2024, the number of internet users in China is nearly 1.1 billion, with short video users accounting for 95.5%. When people's communication and interaction focus shifts from offline to online, it will inevitably make some characteristics of online language more prominent, such as faster, more direct, and richer expression. Its purpose of use is not only to convey communication information, but also to have social and entertainment functions. In the trend of seeking novelty and uniqueness, it is not difficult to understand that it is somewhat "bloated" and "inflated". However, the combination of mud and sand and overly exaggerated online discourse can also invisibly create a "crowding out effect" on written language and standardized expression, leading to the popularity of "verbal aphasia". I still hold a grudge against the "call inflation", which reflects the rational thinking and self-examination of the vast number of netizens, attempting to gain a deeper understanding of the language variation in the Internet era, and to have more self-control and expression improvement; On the other hand, it also attempts to observe the real picture of social life through changes in language, in order to better understand the present and keep up with this rapidly advancing era. Of course, many people's concerns focus on whether they can still speak well and the long-term impact of online language on teenagers. The relevant departments have taken action to continuously rectify the problems of non-standard and uncivilized language and writing, the fabrication of internet slang and bad memes, and the abuse of implicit expressions. For some non bottom line issues and harmless expressions, a certain degree of tolerance and respect should be given, allowing different voices and personalized expressions to exist. From a deeper perspective, the attention to "call inflation" is also related to traditional Chinese beliefs since ancient times. For thousands of years, we have advocated the values of "cherishing words and paper" and "cherishing words as precious as gold". We advocate for concise and profound language, emphasizing the importance of using small words to convey big meanings. In our writing, we strive to get straight to the point, without adding too many words or too many. Classic sentences in textbooks such as "recite one word, twist several stems and tendrils" and "two sentences taken three years, one poem brings tears to our eyes" are deeply ingrained in people's hearts. From 'cherishing words like gold' to 'expanding communication', it reflects changes in discourse, concepts, as well as changes in the times and society. But as netizens have said, we cannot "beat them all with one stick". "Inflation" precisely shows the active, creative, individualistic, and innovative side of the online society. Using standardized language alone may not be enough to showcase the "interesting soul" of netizens. Faced with the increasingly common phenomenon of language poverty and weakened expression ability, individuals are not without choices, and their pursuit and longing for deep and beautiful expression will not disappear completely as a result. Amidst the tide of the times, being more vigilant about the "talk inflation", being more sincere and rational, taking more time to read and think, and speaking the truth and sincere words are all attitudes that refuse to follow the crowd.
