Generative AI, paper assistant or cheating tool
2024-12-20
Recently, an article titled "ChatGPT celebrates its second anniversary, 'AI smells in college students' homework'" has gone viral online. This article vividly outlines the teacher-student interactions after AI invades universities: college students join ChatGPT membership, "pay for technology", and use AI to complete daily homework assignments; Teachers, on the other hand, transform into human flesh AI flavor detectors and engage in a battle of wits and courage with students amidst confusion and wavering. This article has resonated widely due to its authenticity, and has also sparked attention and discussion on academic integrity issues under the impact of AI. Two years ago, ChatGPT emerged and shocked the world. Subsequently, various large-scale models were introduced after you finished singing, accelerating their implementation and iteration, and seamlessly integrated into our work and life with lightning speed. Faced with the power of generative AI, university gates are powerless, and some schools choose to open their doors after a brief stalemate. Generative AI has entered university classrooms, but at the same time, the problem of cheating using AI is becoming increasingly prominent. Although no user will voluntarily admit it, using AI to complete classroom assignments or even graduation theses is already an open secret on campus. Among them, there are stories of "the AI generated content for the opening report of a graduate thesis reaches up to 80%". Amidst the global trend, according to foreign media reports, the number of academic misconduct involving generative AI in many top universities in the UK has surged, with some institutions recording a 15 fold increase in suspected AI cases. Nowadays, we are unable to completely eliminate AI from our world. Since the invasion of generative AI is inevitable, the only question left for us is how to regulate and guide the rational use of AI in paper writing. Powerful assistant or cheating artifact? It depends on how we define 'assistance', how we draw the boundary between 'assistance' and 'ghostwriting', and where we mark the red line for 'AI cheating'. In other words, to what extent and in what ways should AI appear and participate in paper writing? Under the proliferation of AI applications, it is urgent for us to straighten out every question mark. Not long ago, Fudan University officially released the "Fudan University Regulations on the Use of AI Tools in Undergraduate Thesis (Design) (Trial)", proposing "six prohibitions", such as prohibiting the use of AI for language polishing and translation, and providing detailed regulations on the use of AI tools in the process of writing undergraduate thesis (Design). Prior to this, several universities such as Fuzhou University and Hubei University have also issued regulations to test the proportion of artificial intelligence generated content in graduation designs (papers). If the AI rate exceeds the standard, self inspection and self correction will be required, and this will be linked to evaluation and other aspects. Although there are still controversies within the academic community regarding some specific rules; There is still a lack of effective detection tools for AI usage rate; In the fierce competition for GPA, the standardized effectiveness of self-reported AI usage is uncertain, but it is undeniable that these normative documents fill this gap. They serve as calipers and standards, providing specific action guidelines for students who feel lost in a brief period of disorder. In these specific action guidelines, students will further experience and understand academic integrity, and gradually explore and form their own "peaceful coexistence" interaction mode with AI through continuous practice. In a graduation thesis that should reflect critical thinking and creativity, when AI can easily achieve such a comprehensive approach, while praising its "productivity", will we also break out in a cold sweat, and will there be a question constantly hovering in our minds: What else is there that we cannot replace? Not only university teachers and students, but everyone who is in the AI era needs to constantly ask themselves. (New Society)
