On the afternoon of the 16th local time, Wu Yan, Deputy Minister of Education, led a delegation accompanied by Peng Yijun, Acting Charg é d'affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Malta, to visit and inspect the Mediterranean Traditional Chinese Medicine Center in Malta. The captain of the medical team, Yang Libai, gave a detailed introduction to the development history and achievements of the Mediterranean Traditional Chinese Medicine Center. In 1984, Jiangsu Province took the lead in sending renowned traditional Chinese medicine practitioners such as Chen Gongsun and Li Yutang to work in Malta, marking the beginning of the spread of traditional Chinese medicine in Malta. In July 1993, Jiangsu Province dispatched the first batch of foreign medical aid teams, further promoting the popularization and development of traditional Chinese medicine in Malta. In April 1994, former Deputy Minister of Health Zhang Wenkang visited Malta and signed an agreement with the Maltese government on cooperation in the field of traditional Chinese medicine, officially unveiling the Mediterranean Traditional Chinese Medicine Center. After years of development, the Mediterranean Traditional Chinese Medicine Center has become a renowned institution for traditional Chinese medicine medical treatment and training in Malta and the Mediterranean region. In 2000, the Traditional Chinese Medicine department of Gozo General Hospital opened, marking the official entry of traditional Chinese medicine into the Maltese public hospital system. In February 2008, the National Hospital of Malta opened a Traditional Chinese Medicine department and designated medical staff from Jiangsu Province, who worked at the Mediterranean Traditional Chinese Medicine Center, as the main patient. This measure made Malta the first European country to obtain parliamentary approval to establish a Traditional Chinese Medicine department in the government's largest comprehensive hospital. Up to now, Jiangsu Province has dispatched a total of 120 foreign medical aid team members in 20 phases. They have treated over 250000 patients in the Mediterranean Traditional Chinese Medicine Center and other medical institutions, which is more than half of Malta's population. This fully demonstrates the extensive influence and profound significance of traditional Chinese medicine in Malta and the Mediterranean region. Wu Yan highly praised the work done by the medical team assisting Malaysia since its establishment. He encouraged the medical team to continue to carry forward the fine traditions and make new contributions to the friendship between China and Malaysia. The medical team members expressed their deep encouragement and determination to live up to the expectations of the motherland and the people, repay society with even better results, and make greater contributions to the friendship between China and Malaysia and the international dissemination of traditional Chinese medicine. In the afternoon of that day, Wu Yan and his delegation also came to the Malta National College of Humanities and Technology (MCAST) to witness the signing ceremony of the Zhenghe Traditional Chinese Medicine Education Center agreement, which was composed of three parties: the Malta National College of Humanities and Technology, Jiangsu Vocational College of Medicine, and Mediterranean Traditional Chinese Medicine Center. The Mediterranean Traditional Chinese Medicine Center will become a clinical teaching center in the tripartite agreement, providing rich clinical teaching resources for students of the Zhenghe Traditional Chinese Medicine Education Center and opening a new chapter in the center's clinical teaching. The visit and signing of the cooperation agreement not only inject new vitality into the dissemination and development of traditional Chinese medicine in Malta and the Mediterranean region, but also provide new opportunities for exchanges and cooperation between China and Malta in education, healthcare, culture, and other fields. In the future, with the continuous deepening of cooperation among all parties, traditional Chinese medicine will play a more important role on the international stage and make new contributions to improving human health and well-being.
