Impressions of China at the United Nations Conference to Combat Desertification

Every second, desertification takes away land equivalent to four football fields on Earth. The struggle against desertification is related to the human homeland and its own destiny. China is one of the countries with the most severe desertification in the world, and also one of the countries with the most significant achievements in desertification control. At the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (hereinafter referred to as the Convention) held in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, China's decades long practice, achievements, responsibilities, and commitments in desertification prevention and control were widely praised, injecting strength and confidence into the global efforts to combat desertification. At this conference, "China" is a high-frequency term, and the China Pavilion is a popular venue. Experts and guests from various countries came to the China Pavilion to "learn from experience" in desertification control and discuss exchange and cooperation. Andrea Mesa Murillo, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Convention, stopped and visited in front of the exhibition photo "Blue Thread of the Road - Pioneering Large scale Desertification Prevention and Control" at the China Pavilion. Seeing the scene of grassroots efforts to control desertification in China, Murillo was deeply moved. Excellent leadership, scientific policies, efficient and resolute implementation, joint efforts between local and civilian communities, and the integration and unity of innovation and tradition are the experiences we see in China, "she said. As the largest national pavilion after the Saudi Arabia Pavilion, the China Pavilion not only showcases equipment and technologies such as mechanical seedling planting, low-cost sand control, and photovoltaic sand control, but also showcases technological systems such as land degradation big data monitoring systems. It also presents successful models of sand prevention and control in China's "Three North" regions, such as Ningxia and Inner Mongolia. Valerie Hickey, Director of the Global Environment Department of the World Bank, said that countries in the global South have limited funds and need to use scarce resources as growth engines. China's desertification control model is a "beacon of hope" for countries committed to solving desertification problems, providing a "roadmap" to success. Li Lifeng, Director of the Land and Water Resources Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, said that China has developed a comprehensive soil information system and formulated relevant laws for land protection and desertification prevention and control. China's monitoring and management methods for soil are worth introducing to other regions. During the conference, Ibrahim Tio, Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Convention, had a busy schedule, but he still carefully visited the China Pavilion, gaining a deep understanding of the details of China's desertification control plan, from the "brush net rope grass grid sand barrier" technology, efficient photovoltaic equipment, tree planting robots, satellite remote sensing monitoring systems, to the sustainable development story of the smart sand industry. Theo sighed and said that China's desertification control is definitely a very good example. The spirit of "three north" inspires confidence and determination. The "three north" shelter forest project extends more than 4400 kilometers from east to west, covering northwest, north and northeast China, transforming "thousands of miles of sandstorms" into "green Great Wall", and setting an international model of ecological governance. During this conference, China systematically showcased and promoted desertification prevention and control and the "Three Norths" campaign in the form of a special exhibition for the first time overseas. Upon seeing the achievements of the "Three North" project, Mauritanian expert Torad Medo was very excited. Meiduo once studied business in China and now serves as the head of the Communication and International Cooperation Department of the Mauritania National Agency for the African "Green Great Wall". He is dedicated to international cooperation in desertification prevention and control, with the main task of coordinating with China on the construction of the African "Green Great Wall" in Mauritania. Desertification is the biggest problem in our country, so I sincerely thank China for helping us in this fight against desertification and providing us with the technology to cope with desertification Meiduo said. To resist the threat of the world's largest desert, the Sahara Desert, 11 sub Saharan countries, including Mauritania, have joined hands to develop the "Green Great Wall" plan for Africa, building a forest protection belt that is 15 kilometers wide and over 7000 kilometers long. The inspiration for this magnificent project comes from China's "Green Great Wall" - the "Three North" project. The Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has cooperated with the Pan African "Green Great Wall" organization to build a "China Africa Green Technology Park" in Mauritania to demonstrate China's desertification control technology and programs. Sidna Ahmed Elie, Director General of the Mauritania National Agency for Africa's' Green Great Wall ', said,' We have gained strength and confidence from China's' Green Great Wall '. China's contribution to promoting global cooperation marks the 30th anniversary of China's signing of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification this year.'. For the past 30 years, China has firmly supported the United Nations' efforts to combat desertification. China actively fulfills its obligations and achieves the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of zero growth in land degradation ahead of schedule. It also successfully held the 13th Conference of the Parties to the Convention and achieved fruitful results. The United Nations Environment Programme awarded the "Global 500 Best" medal to the "Three North" project, and the Secretariat of the Convention twice awarded China the "Outstanding Contribution Award for Desertification Prevention and Control", praising "the world's desertification prevention and control looks to China". Over the past 30 years, China's international cooperation in combating desertification has been steady and far-reaching. China has developed the "the Belt and Road" cooperation mechanism to combat desertification, established China Arab and China Mongolia desertification control centers, established demonstration bases for desertification prevention and control in Mongolia, Central Asia, Africa and other places, held the Kubuqi International Desert Forum for nine consecutive sessions, and also shared desertification control technologies and experience with Central Asian and African countries that are also facing desertification problems, provided skills training, and injected impetus into the global South's common green development. China adheres to the top-level design and path of integrated protection and systematic governance of mountains, waters, forests, fields, lakes, grasses, and sands, which coincides with the United Nations concept of sustainable development. Barron Joseph Orr, Chief Scientist of the Secretariat of the Convention, commented that "China has actually adopted a very comprehensive approach to address land degradation." Combating desertification is a heavy and arduous task, and only by working together can we jointly tackle it. China's desertification prevention and control plans and wisdom are being borrowed by more and more countries and regions, and continue to contribute to promoting global governance of desertification prevention and control.
