Huaxi Village, Zhongyi Township, Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County, Chongqing: The bee industry makes life sweeter

2024-12-18

In mid November, Huaxi Village in Zhongyi Township, Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County, Chongqing has entered the best harvest season for Polygonatum sibiricum and medicinal papaya. Winding upwards along the mountain path, at the folds of the mountains on both sides, suddenly a "chicken coop" and "palm field" covered with yellow and clear fruits appeared. That's medicinal papaya! "Said Wang Xiangsheng, the secretary of the Huaxi Village Party Branch." Huaxi is all mountains, so we will use these 'chicken coops' and' palm fields' to develop characteristic industries. "When the reporter saw Tan Wenxiang, a 68 year old villager, he was digging for the Chinese medicinal herb Huangjing with several old buddies in the 'chicken coops' next to the farmhouse. When the reporter arrived, Tan Wenxiang and another villager put down their hoes and picked up a freshly dug piece of Huangjing, saying, "Don't look at such a small piece of land, it can dig two or three hundred pounds! Look, this piece of land weighs one or twenty pounds!" Huaxi Village, with an average altitude of over 1000 meters, was once a typical impoverished village in the Wuling Mountain area, a concentrated and contiguous area of extreme poverty in China. In 2014, the poverty incidence rate in the whole village was 18.5%. Wang Xiangsheng recalled that like many mountainous villages in Chongqing, Huaxi Village at that time had little industry and could only barely make a living by relying on the "three big lumps" of potatoes, sweet potatoes, and old corn. In the process of poverty alleviation, Huaxi Village has opened up roads, renovated dilapidated houses, and provided tap water to every household. Infrastructure has improved, living environment has improved, what is the path to increasing income and becoming prosperous? In 2017, Huaxi Village became a pilot village for the rural "three transformations" reform in Chongqing, where resources were transformed into assets, funds into stocks, and farmers into shareholders. The village established a collective economic stock cooperative and transferred 1088 acres of "abandoned land" to develop crispy peaches, crispy plums, and medicinal papayas. Under the economic forest, shade loving Polygonatum sibiricum was planted, and the advantage of secondary flowering in mountainous areas was utilized to breed Chinese bees. In recent years, the village has effectively linked the consolidation and expansion of poverty alleviation achievements with rural revitalization, and has launched more than 30 types of agricultural deep processing products. Chongqing Huaxi Village Huangjing Noodle Industry Co., Ltd., which will be put into operation in 2022, has an annual output of over 300 tons of Huangjing noodles and its products have been exported to 13 countries. The refinement and strengthening of local specialties have improved the overall appearance of the village. The ancient trees and bridges, Tujia villages, small streams flowing through the village, and steep mountain peaks that have made villagers sigh in the past have all become unique advantages of the integration of agriculture, culture, and tourism in Huaxi Village. The village invited enthusiastic public welfare artists to build bee cartoon statues along the mountain road, design honey colored farmhouses for the villagers, add bee cartoon paintings to the farmhouses, and also build the Chuxin Courtyard, Chuxin Bookstore, and themed post office in the village, allowing tourists to experience the changes brought by poverty alleviation and rural revitalization to a remote mountainous village firsthand. In 2020, Huaxi Village and six other villages in Zhongyi Township jointly established Yiqi Running Culture Communication Co., Ltd. in Shizhu Tujia Autonomous County, integrating village resources, expanding product formats, and creating an overall industrial chain that integrates teaching and research, food, accommodation, transportation, tourism, shopping, and entertainment. How can collective economy and industrial transformation better benefit every household? Huaxi Village has established a "leading enterprise+village collective economic organization+farmers" interest linkage mechanism. The village collective transfers land uniformly, the leading company organizes production uniformly, and the planted "chicken nest land" and "palm field" are returned to nearby villagers for management and protection, allowing them to earn an additional management fee in addition to land investment dividends and sales dividends of characteristic agricultural products. Tan Wenxiang's four to five acres of mountainous land have been transferred to the village collective for planting Polygonatum sibiricum and papaya, with an annual income of four to five hundred yuan per acre. On average, he helps the village collective "work on the road" for about 20 days a month, with a daily salary of about 80 yuan. "It's just like going to work, with weekends off," Tan Wenxiang said happily. All training courses of Yiqi Running Company are undertaken by trained farmers, and the remuneration for farmers serving as instructors ranges from 100 yuan per day to 300 yuan per day according to the rating. I have been raising bees for over 20 years, but I never thought that one day I would be able to become a teacher 55 year old Ran Qifan raised many bees in the mountains at an altitude of over 1000 meters, but he was still shocked when he heard that the village wanted him to become a "bee science popularization teacher". Fortunately, he was well versed in the various habits of bees, and Yiqi Running Company organized personnel to work with him to compile the "Bee Lesson Plan". His beekeeping farm also became a contracted research base. Every winter, the flowers on the mountain wither, and study tours become the most important source of income for beekeeping farms. Wang Xiangsheng calculated several accounts for the reporter: the per capita income of the whole village will exceed 25000 yuan in 2023, the collective economic income of the village will be 2.37 million yuan in 2023, and it is expected to reach 5 million yuan in 2024. According to the regulations, only 10% of the annual profits of the village collective economy are reserved as development funds, 60% are used for dividends to villagers, and 30% are used to assist disadvantaged families and seriously ill patients, provide living allowances for elderly people over 70 years old, reward students, and villagers who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the entire village. In recent years, five or six hundred villagers have benefited from this. After harvesting the Polygonatum sibiricum and papaya, the leaves of the camphor tree have also turned yellow. The mountain is covered in colorful leaves, with various colors including red, yellow, green, and green. At this time, the most tourists come to Huaxi, and it is also the season when Huaxi people enjoy the most delicious' cultural tourism food ' Wang Xiangsheng smiled and said, "We have been singing 'The Sun Comes Out Joyfully' since we were young. This is the most famous song in our Shizhu Tujia folk song 'Luo'er Tune'. In the past, people's biggest wish expressed in the song was' not worried about food or clothing '. Nowadays, we hum this song almost every day, and the more we sing, the sweeter we feel today's life is
