Four misconceptions about 'sugar'
2024-12-16
With the change of lifestyle and dietary structure of Chinese residents, the prevalence of diabetes is increasing year by year. The survey shows that the prevalence rate of diabetes among residents aged 18 and above is 11.9%, the detection rate of diabetes in early stage is 35.2%, and the prevalence rate of people aged 50 and above is higher. "If you get diabetes, you can't eat sweets" "If you can't even enjoy delicious food, how can you talk about happiness?" Many diabetes patients complain. In this regard, He Li, a researcher from the Institute of Nutrition and Health of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that as long as we maintain a balanced and reasonable diet, control the intake of total energy and carbohydrates in an appropriate amount, and monitor our own blood sugar, diabetes patients can also enjoy delicious food like normal people. She especially reminded us to pay attention to these misconceptions: 1. Can you avoid diabetes by eating less sugar? In fact, the amount of sugar is not directly related to diabetes - the root cause of diabetes is that there is something wrong with the islets that secrete insulin or the tissues and organs that function with insulin, and there is no way to "digest" the glucose in the blood. This has something to do with heredity, diet, physical activity and environmental factors. It is unrealistic to prevent diabetes only by controlling sugar. We should prevent its occurrence and development from many aspects. 2. Can't you eat sweets when you get diabetes? Under the premise of reasonable control of total energy and balanced nutrition, it is safe for diabetes patients to take an appropriate amount of fruits with low glycemic index or a small amount of sweets. For diabetes patients who like to eat sweet food, on the premise that the total amount of food remains unchanged, they can choose to substitute sweeteners for foods added with sugar to retain the sweet taste without increasing energy intake. Sweeteners almost do not affect the blood sugar level. At present, they have been widely used in the diet of diabetes patients. It is safe to take an appropriate amount of food or drink added with non nutritional sweeteners. However, it should be noted that although some sugar free foods do not contain refined sugars such as sucrose during production, the food itself still contains starch, which will be broken down into glucose in the body, so excessive intake is not recommended. 3. Do diabetes patients only need to control sugar without controlling oil and salt? In fact, high oil and high salt diet will increase the risk of diabetes, which is no less harmful than high sugar diet. The 2017 study of the European diabetes Association showed that when the daily salt intake of adults exceeded the normal range, the risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes would increase by 65% for every 2.5g increase. High oil diet will lead to hypertriglyceridemia, which will aggravate insulin resistance and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Therefore, in addition to controlling the intake of sugar, diabetes patients should also pay attention to light diet and control the intake of oil and salt - the daily consumption of cooking salt should not exceed 5g, and the consumption of cooking oil should be controlled within 25g. Is it better to control blood sugar levels as low as possible? For general type 2 diabetes patients, blood sugar can be controlled to the extent that it can reduce the risk of complications of diabetes, that is, fasting blood sugar 4.4~7.0 mmol/L, non fasting blood sugar<10.0 mmol/L, high blood sugar and low blood sugar are not good. In order to control blood sugar, some patients with diabetes will not hesitate to take the diet of carbon cutting water and carbon cutting water, or use too many drugs, which will lead to low blood sugar or even hypoglycemia. These practices are not advisable. Long term hypoglycemia can cause harm to the nervous system, blood vessels, and internal organs, and can easily trigger cardiovascular and cerebrovascular problems. Therefore, patients with diabetes must take medicine strictly according to the doctor's advice, and usually take some sugary food or drinks with them when they go out. Eating a little when there is slight hypoglycemia can effectively alleviate the symptoms of hypoglycemia.
