The international first! China adds another weapon to heavy ion research
2024-12-11
Reporters learned from the Chinese Academy of Sciences on December 10 that the national major scientific research instrument development project - low energy, high current and high charge state heavy ion research device has recently passed the expert acceptance organized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, adding a new edge to China's heavy ion research. It is reported that this device, developed by the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a heavy ion accelerator. Heavy ion accelerators are used to accelerate ions heavier than alpha particles. By generating a beam of heavy ions close to the speed of light, scientists can explore a series of important scientific questions in the microscopic world and continuously expand their understanding of the material world. Meanwhile, heavy ion accelerators are widely used in fields such as new material preparation and disease treatment. This is the world's first low-energy, high current, high charge heavy ion research device Zhao Hongwei, the general director of the device project and an academician of the CAS Member, introduced that compared with heavy ion accelerators that have been built or are under construction in the world, this device has the advantages of multi-function and miniaturization, and has broad application prospects in interdisciplinary frontier basic research and important application fields. This device can provide a heavy ion beam with high current intensity and high charge state, and has a wide range of ion types and energy variations. It will provide advanced experimental conditions for cutting-edge research in nuclear astrophysics, atomic physics, and application research in nuclear energy materials development Sun Liangting, deputy director of the accelerator technology center of the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said. The acceptance expert group believes that this device operates stably and meets the design specifications. The R&D team has independently developed and solved a series of technical bottlenecks, and the overall performance of the core equipment is at the world's leading level. (New Society)
