Digging deep into the potential of ocean carbon sinks
2024-12-10
As the "dual carbon" goals continue to advance, the ocean's carbon sink function is increasingly attracting attention. At present, the recognized and tradable marine carbon sink ecosystems are mangrove forests, coastal salt marshes, and seagrass beds, and China possesses all three of these carbon resources. Estimated based on the global average, China's three major marine ecosystems have an annual carbon sink capacity of 1.27 million to 3.8 million tons of carbon dioxide. The "China Blue Carbon Blue Book 2024" states that China has a large amount of potential marine carbon sink, and the marine carbon sink capacity is showing an upward trend, expected to grow at an average rate of about 2% per year, reaching 4.2 billion tons by 2035, an increase of 20% compared to 2022, indicating that China's marine carbon sink development is huge and has great potential for additional carbon sequestration.
